The college was founded in 1952. St. Annes was originally
called the Society for Home Students. Its 4th Principal Eleanor Plumer, obtained
a large gift from Amy Hartland, and in 1942 renamed it the Society of St. Anne
(the Virgin Marys mother by Christian and Islamic tradition). Hartland left her
entire large estate to the College in 1945. Its coat of arms is that of the
Principals father, Field Marshal Herbert Viscount Plumer, credited with a major
victory at Ypres and one of the few military leaders, whose reputation after WW1
was enhanced.

The St. Anne's College Boat Club official Facebook profile displays the same shield: https://www.facebook.com/StAnnesBC (Redington is a sponsor of the team).
A flag flown at the boathouse, likely
at the Summer Eights, a four-day regatta of bumps races which constitutes the
University's main intercollegiate rowing event of the year, displays the shield
as a banner of arms, but lacks the sword and wreath.
