Accrington have won only one home league game so far this season, while this was just a second league victory for Newport
Newport County climbed off the bottom of the table as they ended their nine-game League Two winless run with a 1-0 triumph at Accrington Stanley.
An unfortunate own goal settled a scrappy contest, with Bobby Kamwa bursting into the penalty area and seeing his cross ricochet into the net off Isaac Sinclair shortly before half-time.
Newport had been the more menacing side up until that point, with Kamwa forcing an early save from Ollie Wright before the Stanley goalkeeper pushed Michael Spellman's goalbound header on to the post.
Accrington's best opportunities came late in the contest, with Exiles keeper Josh Wright pushing Joe Bauress' header over the top before Isaac Heath danced into the penalty area only to drag his shot wide of the near post.
But Newport held on for a much-needed victory at the end of a morale-boosting week which also featured EFL Trophy success at Cardiff City.
David Hughes' team climb to 23rd, above Cheltenham Town - who they face next Saturday - on goal difference after the Robins conceded a stoppage-time equaliser at Gillingham.
Newport are only a point behind a group of three other sides which includes Accrington, who stay 20th after a third straight league defeat.
'Win has been coming' - Hughes
Newport manager David Hughes:
"I thought first half we were excellent, only having one goal to show for the first part of the game was maybe disappointing.
"You know the second half is going to look different, so to show the resilience and character we did [is pleasing].
"I have to say that win's been coming. We have not been poor. We have performed well, we have not got the results that the performances have consistently deserved.
"I am really pleased for the players and I am really pleased for all those supporters on the far side who are clearly right behind the players."
