Look out for the judge's wooden fan (gunbai) when the rikishi meet at the centre of the dohyō.
If he's pointing to the side, it's not time to go yet. When the gyoji points his gunbai to the middle, the tachiai (initial charge) can start.

'I was so excited to come because we went to Japan last year, but we didn't get the chance to see sumar and it's phenomenal, I love the detail.
