Billboard rock Charts Billboard’s rock and alternative charts track the ever-evolving, oft-debated, subgenre-laden category of popular music that originated in the mid-1900s as an amalgamation of sounds from rockabilly to the blues, folk to R&B and jazz to country. Nowadays, Billboard distills the genres’ many subsets into rock, alternative and hard rock subcategories, via album and song charts measuring streaming, radio airplay and/or sales data, as provided to Billboard by Luminate. The combined Top Rock & Alternative Albums and Hot Rock & Alternative Songs charts reflect the top titles encompassing rock and/or alternative and music that also traverses alternative pop, alternative dance and alternative R&B. Billboard also publishes the radio-focused Alternative Airplay, Mainstream Rock Airplay and Adult Alternative Airplay rankings, which track plays at those individual formats, as well as the Rock & Alternative Airplay list that merges all three into one audience-based tally.
