Africa

Africa is a key focus of GIZ's international cooperation. Together with partners such as governments, non-governmental organisations and the private sector, we strengthen the economy and jobs, promote peace, climate and environmental protection, and support digital transformation – thereby making a tangible difference to people's lives for a sustainable and secure future.

Project data for Africa

The content of this project portal is updated daily and is usually available in German and English. The project portal is divided into various levels that structure the different data and content: a supraregional level with information about all GIZ projects along with a continent and a country level. In addition, you can find individual project pages with detailed information about the projects.

As far as the individual project pages are concerned, please note that the database for the project data search is not the same as for the aggregated data. Not every page has an individual project page. This is because individual project pages are not provided for GIZ self-initiated measures (financed using GIZ’s own funds). Moreover, for projects commissioned by parties other than the German Government, project pages can only be posted after approval has been obtained from the commissioning party/client.

Several additional comments on the data are necessary:

  • The commission volumes indicate the volume of ongoing projects, not the commission volume per year.
  • Data on regional projects and programmes are included in the global and continental levels only. They cannot be displayed by selecting more than one of the countries in the region.
  • Definitions:
    • ‘Supraregional global’ includes all GIZ projects.
    • ‘Regional’ projects are implemented in at least two partner countries.
    • ‘Bilateral’ projects are ones that are agreed between Germany and a partner country and are implemented jointly.
    • ‘Combined financing arrangements’ are contributions by third parties (all actors other than the German Government) to TC projects/programmes by the German Government.
    • The term ‘German public sector clients’ refers to municipalities, German federal states and all German federal ministries apart from BMZ.
    • ‘Other commissioning parties/clients’ refers to commissions not awarded by the German Government.

Knowing what works - project evaluations

GIZ uses project evaluations to determine the impact, cost-effectiveness and sustainability of projects. The projects to be evaluated are selected on the basis of a random sample.
