Donations

dblp is humbly asking you for your kind support

The dblp computer science bibliography provides open bibliographic information on major computer science journals and proceedings. Its non-profit service is offered as a common good to the international computer science community. This so far is made possible by public funding from the German federal and state governments.

The global service provided by dblp faces strongly increasing demand. But its net budget is shrinking. Since 2019, costs at our institute have increased by 23%, while the total budget increase amounts to less than 9%. There are no signs that this trend will turn around.

This is why we humbly ask for your support in the form of a donation to Schloss Dagstuhl LZI. Even just a small contribution can make a difference. Thank you very much!

What impact does my donation make?

Development of Schloss Dagstuhl expenses and budgetdblp team expenses by type

Here are some examples how your generous support will make an impact:

  • First and foremost, you are enabling the maintenance of our service in times of factually shrinking budget.
  • The dblp indexing process consists of a series of quality control and semantic enrichment steps based on the intellectual work of human editors. Since 2019, dblp has had a steady team of about eight full-time research developers, editors, and technicians. Productivity improvements have enabled us to arrive at a net increase of annually indexed records by more than 34%, when compared to 2019. In order to improve further, however,  we need to hire and train new editorial staff. Your donation will contribute to this.
  • We do not just add new data; the dblp team is continuously improving the metadata’s quality and its reliability by monitoring the database for errors, fixing incorrect authorship assignments, and updating the directory of journals and conference series. We are already resolving more than 75,000 error cases per year, and there is still a lot more to do.
  • Less editorial workload for dblp’s scientific staff means more focus on developing new tools, such as our recent SPARQL query service. Your contribution will drive the enhancement of our services and the development of new features for the community.
  • So far, we self-host the dblp service on a worn hardware platform. We are working on a cloud-based solution that will provide robust and elastic web services to satisfy the sharp increase in demand: In just one year, we've seen dblp page requests nearly triple and the number of unique IP addresses surge by 1,700%! This comes with recurring costs that need to be refinanced, despite the service being free of charge.

How will my donation be handled?

dblp is operated by Schloss Dagstuhl – Leibniz Center for Informatics. Your donation to Schloss Dagstuhl LZI will directly support the operation and improvement of the dblp computer science bibliography.

All donations are handled independently and are not disclosed to the scientific and editorial staff of dblp in order to protect the integrity of dblp’s editorial decision process. Indexing decisions remain to be based solely on the international scientific relevance of a venue to the computer science community.
