Linda L. Greenow, a devoted professor, mentor, and volunteer, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 74. Linda’s life was defined by intellectual curiosity, compassion, and a quiet and gentle strength that touched everyone she met. Her kindness was palpable, her generosity extended far beyond the classroom; she brought so much spark and good will to each common endeavor. A distinguished scholar in Cultural Geography, Linda served as a professor at SUNY New Paltz from 1985 until her retirement in 2014, where she also chaired the Geography Department. Prior to that, she taught at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant. She was born in Rochester, NY to Virginia Woodworth and Richard Greenow. She earned her PhD from Syracuse University and dedicated her academic career to exploring the cultural landscapes of Latin America, traveling extensively through Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Brazil. Her deep connection to the region was both professional and personal’she married a man from Bolivia, Carlos Torrico, and together they shared nearly 42 years of love and partnership. After retiring, Linda continued to serve her community as a volunteer English instructor at Ulster Literacy Association, where she was cherished by her students and fellow volunteers for her warmth and dedication. Linda is survived by her loving husband and devoted caregiver, Carlos Torrico Canaviri; her niece Anika Kent; nephew Robert F. Kent; brothers-in-law Robert B. Kent and Gualberto Torrico Canaviri; sisters-in-law Marialena T. Kent and Nelly Alvarez Canaviri; and a wide circle of former colleagues, students, and friends whose lives she enriched. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her’her family, her close friends, her learners and people who run Ulster Literacy Association, her colleagues at SUNY New Paltz, The Friends of the Sojourner Truth Library, and the many people whose paths she crossed with grace and generosity. Memorial visitation will be on Wednesday October 8, 2025 beginning at 12 noon at the George J. Moylan Funeral Home Inc., 2053 Route 32, Rosendale. A service will take place at 2 PM. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Linda Greenow to Ulster Literacy Association, 480 Aaron Court, Kingston, NY 12401 by check, or through ulsterliteracy.org.
