2025 Chery Tiggo 4 Pro Ultimate review

If you are looking at buying your first new car, well, you could look at old favourites like the Toyota Yaris and Mazda 2, but both those models are now around $30,000 or more, on the road.

And besides the ballooning price tag, those models are hatchbacks, so passé.

Enter the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, not only undercutting the Toyota and Mazda in price, but it’s also a so-chic small SUV.

But with a smaller price tag, where are the compromises? Or is the Tiggo 4 Pro cheap and Chery-ful in all the right ways?

To address this elephant in the room, the 2025 Chery Tiggo 4 Pro can be had from as little as $23,990 drive-away, but that’s for the base Urban.

This review covers the top-spec Tiggo 4 Pro Ultimate, which is positioned at a still very palatable $26,990 drive-away.

That still makes it cheaper than any Toyota Yaris, Mazda 2 or Suzuki Swift you can buy new right now, and it’s not like Chery has skimped on the equipment to bring that price down.

All models score LED headlights, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, power-adjustable driver's seat, keyless entry, push-button start, dual-zone climate control, and a bevy of safety systems you'll see in models double the price.

Stepping up to the Ultimate nets buyers 18-inch alloy wheels, red-painted brake calipers, a power-operated sunroof, synthetic leather seat trim, heated front seats, surround-view monitor, and a six-speaker Sony-branded sound system.

Powering all grades of the Tiggo 4 Pro is a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine outputting 108kW/210Nm to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Is this Chery missing some nice-to-have features? Yeah, I’ve really grown to appreciate a powered tailgate and ventilated seats are also nice during an Aussie summer. But those are premium features for more premium cars.

What you get here for the price is outstanding value. I mean a sunroof? Dual-zone climate control? A surround-view monitor? Yeah, these are all great features to have in a car at any price point, let alone one under 30 grand.

For comparison, the same $26,990 spend would also get you a GWM Haval Jolion or an MG ZS, but both those models are only base grades lacking in some upmarket features seen on the Tiggo 4 Pro Ultimate.

Customers could also opt for an ageing, and discontinued, first-generation Mitsubishi ASX (from $26,740 before on-road costs for the automatic GS), or other big-name competitors like the Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, Mazda CX-30, and Toyota Corolla Cross, but they are all noticeably more expensive.

As it stands at the time of writing, and without any limited-time offers or discounts, the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro Ultimate represents the best value SUV on the market, balancing cost with a desirable equipment list.

Measuring 4351mm long, 1831mm wide, 1662mm tall and with a 2610mm wheelbase, the Tiggo 4 Pro Ultimate is only marginally smaller than a Mitsubishi ASX.

In fact, all its dimensions, barring overall length that is just 14mm shorter, are larger than the small-SUV-classed Mitsubishi.

Classifications aside, the practical space of the Tiggo 4 Pro is excellent, as evidenced by the size of the boot that can easily fit luggage, a small pram, groceries and more.

Though the 380 litres of volume with all seats in place is by no means class leading, it's important that the space is useable. However, one knock here is that the wheel wells do eat into the width, so wider items like golf clubs might not go in as easily.

Fold the seats down and capacity swells to 1225L, which makes longer items, say from Ikea or Bunnings, easier to accommodate.

The rear seats are also capacious. I’m 185cm tall and will fit behind my driving position easily and comfortably with plenty of head, leg, and shoulder room.

Family buyers should also take note, because I fitted two car seats in the back here without a problem – let’s see a Suzuki Swift or Mazda 2 do that!

Amenities in the rear extend to an air vent, back-seat map pockets, bottle holders in the doors, and a fold-down centre armrest with cupholders.

However, in the front seats, space is serviceable, if not overly generous.

It’s easy enough to find the right driving position and there are storage solutions littered throughout, but the chunky centre console and enlarged steering wheel do make me feel a little more cocooned than I’d like.

Nevertheless, the door pockets will take a large water bottle, there are two cupholders, a rubber-lined storage slit, a deep underarm storage cubby, and a big shelf underneath the shifter to empty your pockets.

So where has the fat been trimmed to keep the price low?

Well, the in-cabin materials aren’t the best I’ve experienced, there are some hard plastics strewn throughout, and I’m not the biggest fan of this gloss-black plastic that will pick up scratches like crazy.

But at least the technology on offer here is pleasant.

There’s a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen bundled together on a single wide display. It looks cool, and works well too, though the instrument cluster's graphics are a little busy and can be overwhelming.

I also find the font for both of these screens is just a touch too small, making the information on show not easily digestible at a glance.

The infotainment screen software isn't the most intuitive, and can even feel basic at times, but if you don't want to come to terms with the default interface, the Tiggo 4 Pro has wired Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto – a rare win for Pixel phone users like myself.

This is also the only way you can get satellite navigation on the screen, as there is no in-built option.

I’ll also mention this climate screen. It’s a nice-to-have but is redundant as the information is also shown on the infotainment screen.

It’s also not a touchscreen either. You have to use the buttons littered around to adjust fan speed and temperature, so it's pointless save for displaying fan speed and temperature readouts.

The 2025 Chery Tiggo 4 has been awarded a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating, despite not being physically crash-tested.

Instead, ANCAP used data from the platform-sharing, but larger, Tiggo 7 Pro with additional data provided by Chery in its assessment.

As such, the Tiggo 4 Pro scored 88 and 87 per cent in the adult and child occupant protection tests, matching the Tiggo 7 Pro.

However, ANCAP conducted its own examination of the Tiggo 4 Pro's active safety systems, wherein it was awarded an 85 per cent score.

For the vulnerable road user protection test, the Chery small SUV scored 79 per cent.

Much has already been said about the active safety systems in more affordable models – namely the calibration can be, at best, annoying and, at worse, downright dangerous.

Here, though, the Tiggo 4 Pro cuts the mustard, with an active safety suite that performs as expected and, mostly, unobtrusively.

Mind you, I didn’t say it's perfect, because the lane-keep assist can be a touch too aggressive with the steering wheel and the driver attention monitor a little too sensitive when not looking dead straight.

But better to have these systems included than not at all.

Other safety systems featured here include autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, door-opening warning, a surround-view monitor, rear parking sensors, and seven airbags.

As with the rest of the Chery range in Australia, the Tiggo 4 Pro is covered by a seven-year warranty with no distance limit for private buyers. Vehicles used for delivery, ride-share, taxi, or other commercial purposes switch to a seven-year/150,000km warranty.

A capped-price service program sees each of the first five services capped at $280 per visit, with the sixth and seventh services a little higher at $376 and $296 respectively. Service intervals are set at 12-month or 15,000km intervals, whichever comes first

A quote for comprehensive insurance on a Tiggo 4 Pro Ultimate came to $2342 per year using a comparative quote for a 35-year-old male living in Chatswood, NSW. Insurance estimates may vary based on your location, driving history, and personal circumstances.

The same owner details for a similarly priced GWM Haval Jolion Premium returned a cheaper $1963 premium, while a Mazda CX-3 G20 Pure came in at $1604.

An issue I’ve encountered in my time with the car is that I can’t seem to get anywhere near the claimed fuel consumption figure.

Chery quotes a combined 7.3 litres per 100 kilometres, but in my time with the car, I’m averaging 9.1L/100km with a mix of inner-city and freeway driving.

Maybe it's my heavy right foot? Maybe it’s the fact I’ve had two car seats in the back nearly full time? Maybe this car is still too new and needs a longer break-in period? Or maybe this 1.5-litre engine is simply not as efficient as competitors?

The Tiggo 4 Pro has impressed so far in terms of equipment, price, and practicality, but is the car’s Achilles heel the way it drives?

Well, no, because this model feels surprisingly well sorted and refined – especially for a re-emerging Chinese brand like Chery.

The 108kW/210Nm on tap here isn’t outstanding or class-leading, but it works well for a car of this shape and size.

Coming away from the lights feels spritely and effortless, and while you won’t win any impromptu drag races, it also doesn’t take an eternity to reach the speed limit either.

Chery has paired the engine with a CVT, which promises to offer better fuel economy and smoother performance, and for the most part it works well in the Tiggo 4 Pro.

The usual drone when accelerating isn’t all that present here, only really showing itself when flat-footing it or trying to build speed quickly.

Speaking of which, the engine does run out of huff closer to triple-digit speeds, meaning overtaking on the freeway can be an exercise in patience.

But where the Tiggo 4 Pro really shines is with inner-city driving, as peak torque is available quite early in the rev range and its diminutive dimensions make it a breeze to weave in and out of traffic, or slot into a tight park.

The suspension is also up to the task in urban settings, with most potholes and speed bumps absorbed capably by the set-up.

Don’t get me wrong, there is a bit of firmness when tackling an obstacle at speed, but for the most part, if you are aware of your surroundings, the Tiggo 4 Pro is a comfortable and compliant SUV.

As for the steering, well it's on the lighter side but still feels connected and communicative enough. However, I have an issue with the sheer size of the wheel itself.

It’s big – or at least it feels big for a car of this size – and what that means is you end up having to turn the wheel more to get the front end pointed in the right direction.

Not a deal-breaker by any stretch, but you know, it’s something I noticed.

Overall, the Tiggo 4 Pro doesn’t do anything overtly wrong, and you’d easily be able to live with this Chery day-to-day.

The Chery Tiggo 4 Pro isn't a jack-of-all-trades, and towing is one of the few boxes it's unable to tick. There's no tow rating for the Tiggo 4 Pro.

The vehicle payload is also on the lower side at 411kg. That's more than enough to carry four average-sized adult passengers, but wouldn't be enough to add a significant towball weight (or heavily loaded roof racks, etc).

Sometimes it's nice to have a burger with the lot, but sometimes a simple cheeseburger will suffice.

The Chery Tiggo 4 Pro is the cheeseburger here, covering all bases to an acceptable and even impressive level – it has useable space, it’s loaded with equipment, and it’s easy to drive.

There are some shortcomings, however, such as an overly aggressive lane-keep system and odd choices in the cabin, but these issues are paltry compared to everything else it does well.

And the Chery on top of this cake is, of course, the price.

For less than $27,000, you won’t find anything this well equipped or practical and also backed by a seven-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty.
