New Year's Democracy Walk đŁâš
Start as you mean to go on - join us for ANTIPARTY's first community event of 2026 - a guided democracy-themed walk!
âWe start at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on Parliament Square - Gandhi viewed democracy as empowerment of the weak, not just mechanical systems or majority rule, which requires inner change and discipline with an emphasis on individual conscience.
âThroughout the day we will journey through the history of democracy that deserves to be remembered - from the Chartists to the Suffragettes, viewing famous monuments as well as learning about those less well-known.
âCome for an enlightening experience guided by Isabella Roberts the Founder of ANTIPARTY and feel free to bring a friend!
âPerhaps you'll be inspired, find out about something you never knew before, or at the very least walk off some of the indulgences of the festive season.
âSpaces are limited so [RSVP for your spot](https://luma.com/q6zaycfy) today - we're looking forward to seeing you soon! đŁâš

Hampstead Heath Spiritual Gathering & Walk
Our 40th Spiritual Creatives gathering - in person!
Come and join us for a lovely walk and talk around Hampstead Heath.
We are meeting just outside Hampstead Heath station (London Overground train) at 11.00 on Sunday the 25th of January.
Please note: This is NOT Hampstead Station on the Northern Line! It is the Hampstead HEATH station. The Google link is here:
[https://goo.gl/maps/AJCNoxkKNj6K9Gp77](https://goo.gl/maps/AJCNoxkKNj6K9Gp77)
We will wait for people to arrive until 11.15am and then we will begin walking. If you arrive later, you will only be able to catch up with us at Kenwood House approximately between 12 and 12.30pm. You should be able to find us sitting around as a group having a drink. If the weather permits, you'll find us outside the main café, towards the back. Look for the guy with the multicoloured scarf... that's me!
After a short break of 20-30 minutes, we then walk back through the Heath, taking the long way round to Parliament Hill, and conclude our stroll back to Hampstead Heath overground station around 2 to 2.30pm.
(Please note that you may become so involved in your conversations that you end up losing sight of the main group! Unfortunately, there is no way for you to catch up with us once we have become separated (and we do NOT check our phones for texts or messages during our walk) so please be mindful and conscious to stay with the main group if you want to keep up. Also please bear in mind that Hampstead Heath can be muddy sometimes, so please wear the appropriate shoes).
After returning to Hampstead Heath Overground station, many of our (usually hungry) members like to continue the camaraderie over lunch at one of the local cafĂ©s or restaurants. As our group has grown over the years, these gatherings can be quite large, so we usually have to split into smaller parties and explore different venues. Some of our favourite spots are Dominiqueâs CafĂ© (dominiquescafe.co.uk) and Silverberries (silverberry.net), both of which offer a welcoming atmosphere and delicious food. Itâs a great way to wind down the walk and continue our conversations.
Spiritual Creatives is a warm-hearted and popular meetup group, as you can see from our ratings and comments!
We hope to meet you then! :-)
Best wishes
Cliff

đOffline Women Book Club
Join the **Offline Women Book Club,** a dedicated space for women to disconnect from the digital noise and discuss in person uplifting books that leave us feeling inspired and empowered.
For our kick-off, we are reading ***Braving the Wilderness* by Brené Brown**. In this book, Brown challenges what we think we know about belonging.
She argues that true belonging isnât something we negotiate with external groups, but something we carry in our hearts. Itâs a powerful guide on finding the courage to stand alone when necessary and how to remain kind and connected in a world that can feel increasingly divided.
We can't wait to see how the book resonate with you and to engage in uplifting discussions. Spots are limited to ensure the group remains small, intimate, and everyone has a great time connecting face-to-face.
Thank you to Angie, one of our amazing members, for suggesting and supporting the start of this Book Club! đ

LCC CITY DRIFTING: Isle of Dogs to Thamesmead [WEST LONDON]
Welcome back ramblers, rovers, loungers and loafers and happy 2026!
It's a new year, but we're picking where we left off, in the onetime capital of cockney London with its dockworkers and gangsters, the Isle of Dogs - which became the landing-pad for an invasion of alien Thatcherites in the 1980s with the construction of Canary Wharf, which now towers over the council estates and parklands of this misunderstood peninsula. From there we'll head west, looking eventually to end up in the Brutalist wonderland (featured in Kubrick's *Clockwork Orange*!) of Thamesmead, possibly by way of the free Woolwich Ferry service from north shore to south.
Meet at Canary Wharf station, out in front of the big curved class canopy. Elizabeth Line services at Abbey Wood will get us home. See you there!
Check planned TfL disruptions here - our day should be all clear for most everybody: https://content.tfl.gov.uk/planned-track-closures.pdf
A little background on our City Drifting project here:
**Now just wait a minute. What the hell is a drift ([dérive](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C3%A9rive))?** A drift is any unplanned journey through the urban landscape in which participants practice a form of radical mindfulness, collectively exploring new ways of relating mentally, ideologically and materially to the "ordinary" urban environment we all think we know so well.
First theorised publicly by Situationist thinker, artist and provocateur Guy Debord in his 1956 essay *[Theory of the Dérive](https://libcom.org/article/theory-derive-guy-debord)*, drifting is a sort of *critique of ideology* done by walking, looking, and feeling. **The urban environment of London is not a neutral space:** it is packed with surveillance equipment, anti-homeless architecture, consumerist [Gruen transfers,](https://www.smartcapitalmind.com/what-is-the-gruen-transfer.htm) crowd management systems and security perimeters, among a thousand other subtle and not-so-subtle methods of population control. Moreover, our everyday relationship to the city and its pathways is conditioned deeply by our habits of movement and our habitual perceptions: our commute to work, to school, our nips down to the shops, etc. **All these routines create what Marxists call a *reified* relationship with the urban environment: through over-familiarity it becomes something seemingly natural, "just there", ordinary, unchangeable - boring.** This boredom and familiarity kills the radical imagination, without which we're fucked.
To be able to start to imagine how society could be transformed, we also need to imagine how spaces, buildings, their use, their whole purpose (and who these serve) could themselves be transformed. A necessary step in this process, according to Debord and the Situationists, is the drift. Like the 19th-century gentleman *[flĂąneur](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fl%C3%A2neur),* by wandering the city with an attitude of "fresh eyes", we can shake loose our ingrained sense of what London and its streets are like. **As a collective, we will work to "estrange our senses" and see the streets, buildings and people differently, as if we were encountering them for the first time.** That is to say: these aren't just random walks around London - with the right frame of mind, they will be opportunities to turn the world upside down, if only for a moment!
But don't take it from me - as Debord observed:
*"In a dérive one or more persons during a certain period **drop their relations, their work and leisure activities, and all their other usual motives for movement and action, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there.** Chance is a less important factor in this activity than one might think: from a dérive point of view cities have [psychogeographical](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychogeography) contours, with constant currents, fixed points and vortexes that strongly discourage entry into or exit from certain zones."*
See you on the streets comrades, and remember, as [Raoul Vaneigem](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raoul_Vaneigem) once wrote: *"All space is occupied by the enemy. We are living under a permanent curfew. Not just the cops â the geometry".*
An easy on-ramp into local activities (Battersea & Clapham)
This is a small, low-key meet for people who want to get more involved in local activities â but donât love turning up alone or blind the first time.
Weâll meet early evening for a relaxed drink and talk through:
* what kinds of things people are curious to try (run clubs, tennis, gym classes, etc.)
* what those activities are actually like
* how easy (or not) they are to return to
Sometimes people decide to try something together another day.
Sometimes they just leave clearer and do it solo later.
Both are completely fine.
This isnât a class, a talk, or a big social night â itâs just an on-ramp.
***
## What this *is*
* A calm starting point
* A way to lower first-time friction
* A place to decide whatâs worth trying
## What this *isnât*
* A party or mixer
* A guarantee of friends
* A commitment to anything after
***
## Who this is good for
* Youâve been meaning to try something locally but keep putting it off
* Youâre socially fine, just not keen on first times alone
* You like low-pressure, small groups
## Who this probably isnât for
* If youâre looking for a high-energy social night
* If you want a hosted activity on the night itself
***
## Practical bits
* Small group (kept intentionally)
* Early evening
* Look for a table at the outside part of the pub under the word 'mingle'
Actively is about helping people decide their scene â and, if it helps, going the first time together.
Effective Altruism, and the Ethics of Doing Good
Effective Altruism is often traced back to a thought experiment popularised by Peter Singer. You walk past a shallow pond and see a child drowning. You could save the child at the cost of ruining your clothes. Most of us agree that you ought to do so. Singerâs challenge is this: if distance and numbers donât change the moral principle, why do we not feel the same obligation to help distant strangers whose lives we could save at relatively small cost?
This session will use Singerâs argument as a starting point to explore the philosophical foundations of Effective Altruism. Weâll ask whether this reasoning really justifies the demanding moral conclusions often drawn from it, and whether Effective Altruism is a persuasive extension of utilitarian ethics or an oversimplification of moral life.
As always at Philosophy Cafe London, the focus will be on philosophical discussion and critical engagement rather than advocacy.
Early bird tickets at ÂŁ3 will be available until Mon 26 Jan
**Where:** Downstairs room, Square Pig, Holborn (private room)
**NB:** The event begins at 7pm, doors open at 6:50pm. Event ends at 9pm
**Format:** 10-minute intro talk â vote on questions â small-group discussion â share insights with the whole room
**Keep in touch:** Join our Philosophy CafĂ© Discord to continue the conversation anytime â https://discord.gg/UGxBqJXM
