Screening as part of the Garden Cinema's [1980s: The Lost Decade of Japanese Cinema](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCBVpNRwYBs) season, Burst City is both a dystopian look at Japan's future and an attempt to chronicle its punk rock present, complete with acting appearances by a load of real-life punks and performances by three bands from different Japanese punk scenes. The plot is essentially that two bands, each of which oversee Mad Max-style biker gangs, face off against each other and the cops as they look to protest the construction of a nuclear power plant. But the movie is more about its kinetic visuals and blast of rock n'roll, and also notable for being an early influence on the country's cyberpunk movement - the link to, say, Akira, isn't hard to spot.
