Dame Priti Patel is a British politician in the Conservative party. She has been the MP for Witham in Essex since 2010 and served as secretary for state for international development from 2016 to 2017 and home secretary from 2019 to 2022. Immigration was a key focus as home secretary and in 2022 she signed a deal to send asylum seekers who cross the English Channel to Rwanda. A key supporter of Boris Johnson, Patel resigned from the government in anticipation of Liz Truss’s victory in the election to succeed him as Tory leader and prime minister.
