The self-styled “hardman of Brexit”, Steve Baker was a staunch advocate for the UK’s departure from the European Union. The Conservative MP for Wycombe from 2010-24, he held several ministerial roles and twice chaired the influential European Research Group (in 2016-17 and from 2019-20). Championing a hardline, no-compromise approach to Brexit, he was a vocal critic of Theresa May's Chequers plan. After losing his seat in the 2024 general election, Baker expressed a sense of relief, remarking “at last I’m free”.
