She's the younger sister of Pollyanna's deceased mother, thus Pollyanna's aunt.
The late John Whittier has set in motion, that Pollyanna shall live with her after his death, if possible.

Polly never forgave John for taking her beloved sister Jennie away with him. After her parents died, she turned into a bitter woman that is focused on keeping up an appearance as well as the family's reputation. She's not very fond of Pollyanna at first, yet will find that nothing better could have happened to her than taking in this little girl.
