Yamagata Sumiko (real name: 山県寿美子) was born October 11, 1956 in Kita, Tokyo, Japan and grew up in Soka, Saitama Prefecture. She is a folk singer and songwriter and the wife of composer and music producer Inoue Akira, whom she married in 1978.
She started to be interested in music already during elementary school, and began to write and compose her own songs. After graduating from Ueno Gakuen Junior High School she was scouted by Nippon Columbia and signed with the talent agency Bird Corporation (バードコーポレーション). In February 1973 she released her first single under the Nippon Columbia label, the self-written and composed Kaze ni Fukarete Ikou (風に吹かれて行こう), marking her debut at the age of 16. In the same year she was selected to write and perform the theme song to the TBS television drama Osananajimi (おさななじみ, Childhood Friend). Ano Nichi no Koto wa (あの日のことは) made her immensely popular to the tv public afterwards. In 1982 she did the themes to popular tv anime Minami no Niji no Lucy, part of Nippon Animation's popular World Masterpiece Theatre.
Although she is still active as singer today, she rarely releases new music or appears on television.
