Along with getting a NovaCustom laptop (discussed elsewhere) — in part b/c I didn't like the keyboard — I switched to traveling w/ an external keyboard. I chose the #HappyHacking Studio model which has a “pointer stick” (similar to a #TrackPoint). I like it enough I've replaced my very old #HHKB (3 models since discontinued) w/ Studio on the desk.

I do find my finger occasionally hits the stick when typing words w/ those nearby letters. I'm not sure how big the problem is, so I #AskFedi …(1/2)

(2/2) …I wanna know how often “pointer stick” (similar to #TrackPoint) is hit on my #HHKB Studio by accident while typing quickly. Catching my error rate will be hard across applications, but perhaps I could measure how often the stick moves pointer a tiny bit after a flurry of typing, which would of course be followed by a tiny but measurable stop in typing (& often backspace presses). I'm familiar w/ `xev` on #Xorg as a method to collect the data, but how hard would it be to analyze?

Due to a timing mishap on my part I'll be attending FOSDEM this year with an insecure front crown (the permanent replacement will not be ready until after I'm already on the way). It's already fallen out once and when it was put back in they said to cut everything up really small when eating. We think we've possibly got a few followers and mutuals who are blind and use some kinds of iOS mobile devices, right?

Enquiring because of a random encounter with another plural trans+ being on Reddit, who advised that they're legally blind and had not found any suitably accessible way to access the fediverse.

Can anybody advise whether there are any such ways, so we can give them some way or ways to join the friendlier fediverse community?

If not, they're stuck largely with Reddit and Bluesky 😅😔

The topic only came up after we advised that we'd found fedi to be much more plural friendly and accepting that most other such places... especially Reddit.

For clarity, we have zero experience of iOS and are not blind (at least presently at least), so we'd appreciate any firsthand experiences very much 🫶🏻

#HIVEMIND: What would be the best way to give a #Linux user with no admin rights (i.e. no access to sudo) have full access to external block devices?

These users need to be able to repartition and put images on USB sticks, but not internal drives.

I'm thinking #udev should be able to do the job, but I don't know if there's a way to specify "all USB block devices." I guess an alternative would be to say "anything but NVMe drives" or "only /dev/sdx drives," but that feels too imprecise.

If there's a better way then I'm all ears.

I'd love to know if anyone experiences this. Pretty suddenly, my temperature regulation is way off. If I eat anything, regardless of spice, I will feel like I am burning up and begin sweating like crazy. But the thermometer does not agree. But then later, I will feel bone-cold, even when the outside and room temp does not correlate, and have to huddle under a blanket for hours at a time. Even having my beloved kitty on my lap can spike my temperature, and I can't have her there as much as we both want her to be there.

Unsure what to attribute it to. Could it be part of my recent significant spine surgery? Could it be an aspect of my largely untreated ME/CFS diagnosis? Could it be related to my alexithymia faced as part of being an AuDHDer? Or something completely different?

Any insights would be appreciated. The several doctors I mentioned this to did not engage with me on this, but I don't think I'm imagining it.

Hey, I'm looking for some #FediHelp! It's #linux related.

So I installed #ZorinOS on my FIL's aging HP Envy x360 2-in-1 laptop, and he's pretty happy with it. The install was smooth, we were able to set him up with some #FOSS software that fit his needs, and move over all of his old files. The OS experience is great and in that regard neither of us have any complaints there.

One issue we keep running into, however: when the laptop is asleep overnight, or sometimes if you just look away for about half an hour, the laptop suspends but doesn't wake up. The keyboard backlight is lit, but the screen is off and nothing will wake it up. We have to reboot it every time.

My old Clevo laptop (+ any variety of distros) did this a while back and the only thing that would (sometimes) fix it was to close the lid, wait a minute or two, and open it again. I was never able to diagnose it, and I think it's happening again here.

Things I've already done:

- Switch display server to X11 only
- Update GRUB params to use the system's acpi tables
- Disable BIOS safe boot
- Updated the firmware

The laptop doesn't have NVIDIA graphics (it's 100% Intel) so I'm not worried about that. My current strategy for making it work during the day is to just never let the screen sleep (he had that on his old laptop and seemed to like it).

Is there anything else I can do for when the laptop has been closed overnight?

I tried an app called Finch, but it was...cloyingly cutesy and I just couldn't take it. It had pay for play gamification and that's a big no from me.

Also tried HabitKit and it was the opposite - no direction at all.

I'm happy to pay a subscription fee, or host something myself - just looking for recommendations.

The purpose is to work through a directory of .rst and .md files to convert and store output html into a sqlite database.

Technically speaking tuta has better encryption for whole of contents including calendar where proton does not encypt certain metadata.

Tuta has had to put a back door into an account due to a court order and is apart of the 14 eyes surveillance. Proton is not but has also logged user IPs for court orders.

Both are great services but what is your pick.

Are most computers physically incapable of acting as USB devices, or is this only enforced at a firmware level? For this purpose, “capable” includes bit-banging.

Ok, the real #question. What about a #homelab in a #garage? It is a separate building with not very tight gates. I'm not worrying about the summer, but in winter it could be cold. Like -10 C outside, and I think it would be the same for the inside of the garage.
And what about the humidity? It is a dry place until it isn't raining. I mean, the roof is fine, but the outside humidity gets inside really fast through the gaps between the gate and the wall.

Time to buy underwear! When it comes to men's boxer briefs, is Jockey a quality brand?

Background: I have tried several brands of men's underwear over the years, and have come to find that I am quite picky. Hanes, Fruit of the Loom, and Joe Boxer are CRAP!! They do not fit comfortably and wear out quickly.

Because I am good at finding discounts, I have tried Papi and Tommy Hilfiger, and loourve them. They are still like new after years of wear, and are super comfy.

I found some Jockeys on sale at Kohl's. Will they be in the good or bad category?

I've been thinking about how, at least the western world, operates a year counting system based on a religion not everyone follows, and less so year by year.

So, if we were to ditch the Christ was allegedly born numbering system, what scientific, rational system would we implement instead? This basically boils down to what year would we start at.

Famously UNIX starts its dates at Jan 1st 1970, so that's a candidate.

Otherwise zero could simply be the start of the next calendar year after the decision, minus numbers for preceding years.

Or we could choose a significant historical or scientific event as year zero, say the discovery of the general theory of relativity.

What else would make a good zero year?

One I am trying to fix was recovered from an email message, but the person's email client inserted strange line breaks when sending it back to me. I tried to correct these line breaks, only for everything to end up all on 1 line. Dialog. Action. Everything. Is there a way I can use regular expressions to correct this a bit easier? I've got a weird mobile issue on a new site I'm toying with.

If you go to this post, for example:

And then click on your share action and choose an app, it only grabs the TLD and not the page title or specific page URL. It works correctly with other pages (including my main blog).

I've checked the meta tags and open graph properties and those all look fine. Where else should I look to figure this out?

In addition to the main, summary accounts, I intend to have accounts for each district, so "(at)GaSenate1" for Senate district 1 (no tags on those posts, you either follow or you don't.)

I've written number of bots, but handling bot overhead - not to mention authentication to get the tokens - seems a bit daunting when you're talking about 250is accounts.

What are some good ways to do this? Since I'll control the server and everything I'd like to script as much as possible. And I probably won't use actual bot code for the posts, just end point points directly.

Besides a website and RSS feeds, I'm thinking of mastodon account that posts legislative action.

I'm curious if it'd be worth it to make individual accounts for votes by each member. Partly that seems like overkill. But part of me thinks it be easier to just follow, say, your reps.

dear fedi folk,

does anyone here have experience with csf leaks (ideally as a result of hEDS but not necessarily)? i'm on day 12 (13?) of a devil migraine that's affected my balance and vision, worsened my POTS and tinnitus, is causing sporadic pulsatile tinnitus as well plus mega-weird pulsing pressure in my head, and is seriously messing with my brain/anxiety. plus ofc the nausea and flashes. and pain in my head and neck, which is sometimes quite severe. so i'm wondering if it's actually a migraine or not.

these symptoms aren't new-new (and i haven't had a headache-free day in literally years, migraine or "just" a headache), but they are getting worse / more frequent, and i'm getting worried.

i also don't have a doctor here bc multiple drs in this country have told me that ehlers-danlos and sjögren's and autonomic dysfunction, etc., don't exist. at all.

(i will go to urgent care if things get worse, but it's far and they'll likely just send me home, so.)

so if anyone's dealt with this and wouldn't mind comparing notes, i'd love to.

I haven't used TikTok since before I found the Fediverse, so I don't know. I do know that some people came over here from over there, in response to the so-called ban back in January. I know the Fediverse definitely was talked about on TikTok, during that time, because I saw it (people posted some of the videos here).

Are we still a topic of discussion elsewhere?
