I started putting my thoughts together on why I don't use AI. :NoAI: It will take time to write it all out, it feels like an essay. I could probably come up with a hundred reasons, but I am currently at eight just off the top of my head.

I want to share one that no one talks about.

Big tech companies are using cheap labor in the global south to filter the human trauma on the internet in order to train LLM models. People in countries like Kenya, India, and the Philippines spend 9+ hours per day viewing the most horrific content imaginable (violence, abuse, hate speech, etc) at $1.50/hr. They are literally using the minds of people in precarious economic situations as a filter to protect the sensibilities of the wealthy. They claim it is opportunity when it is actually predatory.

The next time you ask an "ai" to summarize a 450 word article for you, think about the human filter required to make that answer safe. You are not just saving time, you are benefiting from a predatory labor practice that pays pennies to protect your sensibilities.

@jzb maybe we should start that trend. If you can't destroy it = join it and ruin it from the inside. It's the way the parents on an episode is SouthPark got rid of this Pokémon trend that got into all the kids of the town. They joined in, making it uncool

A mere week into 2026, OpenAI launched “ChatGPT Health” in the United States, asking users to upload their personal medical data and link up their health apps in exchange for the chatbot’s advice about diet, sleep, work-outs, and even personal insurance decisions.
        (from https://buttondown.com/maiht3k/archive/chatgpt-wants-your-health-data/).

This is the probably inevitable endgame of FitBit and other "measured life" technologies. It isn't about health; it's about mass managing bodies. It's a short hop from there to mass managing minds, which this "psychologized" technology is already being deployed to do (AI therapists and whatnot). Fully corporatized human resource management for the leisure class (you and I are not the intended beneficiaries, to be clear; we're the mass).

Neural implants would finish the job, I guess. It's interesting how the tech sector pushes its tech closer and closer to the physical head and face. Eventually the push to penetrate the head (e.g. Neuralink) should intensify. Always with some attached promise of convenience, privilege, wealth, freedom of course.

A thought that popped into my head when I woke up at 4 am and couldn’t get back to sleep…

Imagine that AI/LLM tools were being marketed to workers as a way to do the same work more quickly and work fewer hours without telling their employers.

“Use ChatGPT to write your TPS reports, go home at lunchtime. Spend more time with your kids!” “Use Claude to write your code, turn 60-hour weeks into four-day weekends!” “Collect two paychecks by using AI! You can hold two jobs without the boss knowing the difference!”

Imagine if AI/LLM tools were not shareholder catnip, but a grassroots movement of tooling that workers were sharing with each other to work less. Same quality of output, but instead of being pushed top-down, being adopted to empower people to work less and “cheat” employers.

Imagine if unions were arguing for the right of workers to use LLMs as labor saving devices, instead of trying to protect members from their damage.

CEOs would be screaming bloody murder. There’d be an overnight industry in AI-detection tools and immediate bans on AI in the workplace. Instead of Microsoft CoPilot 365, Satya would be out promoting Microsoft SlopGuard - add ons that detect LLM tools running on Windows and prevent AI scrapers from harvesting your company’s valuable content for training.

The media would be running horror stories about the terrible trend of workers getting the same pay for working less, and the awful quality of LLM output. Maybe they’d still call them “hallucinations,” but it’d be in the terrified tone of 80s anti-drug PSAs.

What I’m trying to say in my sleep-deprived state is that you shouldn’t ignore the intent and ill effects of these tools. If they were good for you, shareholders would hate them.

You should understand that they’re anti-worker and anti-human. TPTB would be fighting them tooth and nail if their benefits were reversed. It doesn’t matter how good they get, or how interesting they are: the ultimate purpose of the industry behind them is to create less demand for labor and aggregate more wealth in fewer hands.

Unless you happen to be in a very very small club of ultra-wealthy tech bros, they’re not for you, they’re against you.

A popular TikTok channel featuring an "Aboriginal man" presenting animal facts has been exposed as an AI forgery.

AI is Iggy Azalea on an industrial scale:

"The self-described “Bush Legend” on TikTok, Facebook and Instagram is growing in popularity.

"These short and sharp videos feature an Aboriginal man – sometimes painted up in ochre, other times in an all khaki outfit – as he introduces different native animals and facts about them.
            ...
"But the Bush Legend isn’t real. He is generated by artificial intelligence (AI).

"This is a part of a growing influx of AI being utilised to represent Indigenous peoples, knowledges and cultures with no community accountability or relationships with Indigenous peoples. It forms a new type of cultural appropriation, one that Indigenous peoples are increasingly concerned about."
            ...
"We are seeing the rise of an AI Blakface that is utilised with ease thanks to the availability and prevalence of AI.

"Non-Indigenous people and entities are able to create Indigenous personas through AI, often grounded in stereotypical representations that both amalgamate and appropriate cultures."

Regarding the ideological nature of what's at play, it's well worth looking more into ecological rationality and its neighbors. There is a pretty significant body of evidence at this point that in a wide variety of cases of interest, simple small data methods demonstrably outperform complex big data ones. Benchmarking is a tricky subject, and there are specific (and well-chosen, I'd say) benchmarks on which models like LLMs perform better than alternatives. Nevertheless, "less is more" phenomena are well-documented, and conversations about when to apply simple/small methods and when to use complex/large ones are conspicuously absent. Also absent are conversations about what Leonard Savage--the guy who arguably ushered in the rise of Bayesian inference, which makes up the guts of a lot of modern AI--referred to as "small" versus "large" worlds, and how absurd it is to apply statistical techniques to large worlds. I'd argue that the vast majority of horrors we hear LLMs implicated in involve large worlds in Savage's sense, including applications to government or judicial decisionmaking and "companion" bots. "Self-driving" cars that are not car-skinned trains are another (the word "self" in that name is a tell). This means in particular that applying LLMs to large world problems directly contradicts the mathematical foundations on which their efficacy is (supposedly) grounded.

Therefore, if we were having a technical conversation about large language models and their use, we'd be addressing these and related concerns. But I don't think that's what the conversation's been about, not in the public sphere nor in the technical sphere.

All this goes beyond AI. Henry Brighton (I think?) coined the phrase "the bias bias" to refer to a tendency where, when applying a model to a problem, people respond to inadequate outcomes by adding complexity to the model. This goes for mathematical models as much as computational models. The rationale seems to be that the more "true to life" the model is, the more likely it is to succeed (whatever that may mean for them). People are often surprised to learn that this is not always the case: models can and sometimes do become less likely to succeed the more "true to life" they're made. The bias bias can lead to even worse outcomes in such cases, triggering the tendency again and resulting in a feedback loop. The end result can be enormously complex models and concomitant extreme surveillance to acquire data to feed data the models. I look at FORPLAN or ChatGPT, and this is what I see.

I proposed two talks for that event. The one that was not accepted (excerpt below) still feels interesting to me and I might someday develop this more, although by now this argument is fairly well-trodden and possibly no longer timely or interesting to make. I obviously don't have the philosophical chops to make an argument at that level, but I'm fascinated by how this technology is so fervently pushed even though it fails on its own technical terms. You don't have to stare too long to recognize there is something non-technical driving this train. "The technologist with well-curated data points knocks chips of error off an AI model to reveal the perfect text generator latent within" is a pretty accurate description and is why I jokingly suggested someone should register the galate.ai domain the other day. If you're not familiar with the Pygmalion myth (in Ovid), check out the company Replika and then Pygmalion to see what I'm getting at. pygmal.io is also available!

                      Anyway:

ChatGPT and related applications are presented as inevitable and unquestionably good. However, Herbert Simon’s bounded rationality, especially in its more modern guise of ecological rationality, stresses the prevalence of “less is more” phenomena, while scholars like Arvind Narayanan (How to Recognize AI Snake Oil) speak directly to AI itself. Briefly, there are times when simpler models, trained on less data, constitute demonstrably better systems than complex models trained on large data sets. Narayanan, following Joseph Weizenbaum, argues that tasks involving human judgment have this quality. If creating useful tools for such tasks were truly the intended goal, one would reject complex models like GPT and their massive data sets, preferring simpler, less data intensive, and better-performing alternatives. In fact one would reject GPT on the same grounds that less well-trained versions of GPT are rejected in favor of more well-trained ones during the training of GPT itself.

How then do we explain the push to use GPT in producing art, making health care decisions, or advising the legal system, all areas requiring sensitive human judgment? One wonders whether models like GPT were never meant to be optimal in the technical sense after all, but rather in a metaphysical sense. In this view an optimized AI model is not a tool but a Platonic ideal that messy human data only approximates during optimization. As a sculptor with well-aimed chisel blows knocks chips off a marble block to reveal the statuesque human form hidden within, so the technologist with well-curated data points knocks chips of error off an AI model to reveal the perfect text generator latent within. Recent news reporting that OpenAI requires more text data than currently exists to perfect its GPT models adds additional weight to the claim that generative AI practitioners seek the ideal, not the real.

@dashremover I genuinely find incredibly useful for doing a lot of systems work (though GPT 4o is _much_ better than 5.2), but I have to treat it as though I just got an idiot savant operator forced upon me on a Youth Training Scheme programme.

Generally, it's amazing, it can do command line stuff I had no idea was even possible, and it's amazing at installing things on obscure and obsolete setups, but you still have to check every single thing it does that you know isn't reversible.

I use GPT a lot, and with the switch from 4 to 5, I think has been pretty reckless, ironically, if you ask why, it will tell you. It's geared towards generating conversation and interaction rather than just following instructions cleanly - And I guess wiping out all of your users' files is a talking point that could generate loads of fun data for the OpenAI datamoles.

I wonder how much damage ChatGPT (in this case, 5.2) causes to people who follow its instructions without checking.

In this case, I saw where it was heading and was curious if it would just tell me to wipe out all my files, so I went with it. And it did.

It's told me to do some pretty destructive things in the past which I have caught, but casually wiping out an entire instance with all of its user-data and trying to frame that as "good news" and pointing out that I should "Accept the loss as done" (which to be fair, would be the only possible action in this case) is about as dangerous as it gets.

Since there’s no seahorse emoji yet, people often substitute with:

🐠 (tropical fish)

🐟 (fish)

🐴 (horse, for the horse part)

🌀 or 🌊 (ocean vibes)

If you want, I can also show you cute text-art seahorses or help you suggest one for a design or message 🐚

I must be honest: when it comes to trying to sound appealing to human-resource drones, I haven't the faintest idea what they want, and I have an extremely bad history of guessing and improvising on my own. В конце концов, любой университет, это коммерческое предприятие, которое продаёт образование. Если такое образование окажется ценным для экономики, то деньги в такой университет потекут. Если нет, то ну чтож, деньги потекут в другой университет, который сделал ставку на что-то другие.

That is why I am giving @MetaGer a try. It ticks off most of the boxes of my search engine wish list. They respects your privacy by not spying on you, no ads, open source, nonprofit with a community led open governance model, custom filtering & prioritization, and most importantly they doesn't push a LLM onto you.

While I cannot find any mention of their stance on LLMs (please let me know if you have a source). Their social media posts seem to suggest they are not fans of it. The fact that they try to filter out slop and do not offer "ai" features is such a relief.

Since they do not have ads they rely on a donation of about €0.01 per search. I think that is reasonable. I am willing to pay for a good service that does not make me the product.

There's a correct answer and a lot of wrong answers, and therefore the business of making a machine that has all the answers to all possible questions is merely a matter of optimizing a single set of probabilities.

They wave away all criticism about the tendency of their devices to spew out wrong answers by insisting that their machines are—they swear up and down—99.5% correct, or 99.7% correct, or 99.85% correct, or some other figure that is always (A) very close to 100% correct and (B) supposedly always getting closer and closer to perfection. What "100% correct" even means, in this context, isn't a question they want to answer.
