Mike Brock addresses his "former friends in crypto and tech," who have inordinate influence on media framing and who affect not to know the extent of protest now against the Trump regime:

I wanted to address my former friends in crypto and tech directly. The ones who said I had Trump derangement syndrome. Who said Kamala would be worse."

You supported him because you were worried Kamala would regulate you. Because you were mad at Lina Khan. It was about your pocketbook. You chose greed, and now Americans are being gunned down in the streets by the man you called the lesser evil."

The crypto industry's bet on Trump is collapsing in real time.

Charles Hoskinson—Ethereum co-founder and Cardano creator who vocally supported Trump in 2024—now says Trump made US crypto "worse than under Biden." He's demanding Trump's crypto czar resign and claims he personally lost $2.5B.

          What happened?
          • Trump's $TRUMP memecoin crashed 80%, destroying bipartisan support for legislation
          • The CLARITY Act (crypto's key regulatory bill) is stalled in Senate
          • Most crypto tokens fell 40-50% since Trump took office
          • Record government shutdown paralyzed Congressional work

The irony: crypto leaders courted Trump expecting a boom. Instead they got memecoins, political toxicity, and legislative gridlock.

Hoskinson's assessment is devastating: "We thought the government would pump our bags. Instead they pulled a rugpull scam on us."

I've mentioned this before, but one thing I've been closely watching for is when crypto people begin to distance themselves from Trump.

            November 2024 vs. January 2026

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson has also clearly been trying to woo Trump, claiming very shortly after the election that he was “going to be spending quite a bit of time working with lawmakers in Washington DC and quite a bit of time with members of the administration to help foster and facilitate with other key leaders in industry the crypto policy”.6 While he has continued to boast vaguely about meetings with various influential figures, winkingly describing a “VIP dinner” where “diet coke will certainly be on [the menu]”, there’s been little outside confirmation that he’s had much access to the Trump administration.

                  Yay!

I got SmartCard authentication with PKINIT/Kerberos working in my home-network/home-lab 🙂

RSA key safely stored on the smartcard, getting a ticket granting ticket (TGT) from the KDC and then authenticating to an SSH host via GSSAPI/Kerberos..

Total overkill for a home-lab? Absolutely! But it's always amazing to learn something new and to have hands-on experience.

“WAGMI” — we're all gonna make it — was crypto's 2021 rallying cry. But those with wealth and power knew it was a lie, and that “all” just meant them. My latest traces the last five years from hype to technoligarchy — and why they're not all gonna make it either.

Remember when technology was going to save us. Of course it wasn't because our problems are not technological but sociological. But at least the technology industry was trying to solve actual problems.

Now the so-called high tech industry focuses on wasting water, energy and computing power to to solve meaningless mathematical problems that have no practical benefit and pretend that creates value and hope that enough people will buy their pretend money to make them rich. Then they go on to waste more water, energy and computing problem to use all the garbage on the Internet to teach software machines to provide inaccurate answers to people's questions that sound like a human was writing (or speaking) the answer, as if that mattered more than the accuracy of the answer. But they hope that will make them even richer and that is all that matters.

                                              On paper. In December.

Then came the crash, and he couldn't sell. He lost everything. Wiped out.

The US Democratic party has been abjectly failing in so many ways. This is such a sad and frustrating read on the failures with respect to cryptocurrency regulation: https://lpeproject.org/blog/inside-the-failure-to-regulate-stablecoins/

What was and still is at stake is the balance between technology and humanity struck by the US federal government. The same incoherence that led us to where we are with crypto is almost surely also at play with the apparent lack of movement around generative AI.

"Silicon Valley venture capitalists are now quoting scripture—and Christian nationalists are now pitching network state cities. So you know things are getting bizarre. But here's the thing: It makes perfect sense because it's a strategy, and it's spelled out in black and white.

In his book, The Network State: How to Start a New Country, Balaji Srinivasan identifies evangelical Christians as followers of the so-called "Red God"—right-wing Republicans who will ally with his gray tribe of tech billionaires.

Together, they'll crush Democrats, democracy, and the nation state. It's a clinical, almost contemptuous framing of Christianity as a political weapon. But it works because both Christian nationalism and tech fascism share the same playbook: seize the pillars of democratic society and replace them with parallel alternatives, all run by authoritarian elites. The Christian nationalists call it the Seven Mountains mandate—taking over government, media, education, business, arts, family, and religion.

The tech authoritarians call it replacing the cathedral with parallel institutions. Different language, same goal: elite minority rule and the end of democracy as we know it. Today on the Nerd Reich podcast, we expose how this alliance actually works.

I'm joined by Matthew Boedy, author of the definitive book on the Seven Mountains mandate, who explains how figures like Charlie Kirk and other religious extremists have been systematically organizing this takeover.

And Mother Jones reporter Kiera Butler takes us inside Highland Rim—a proposed settlement on the Tennessee-Kentucky border that's basically a network state for Christian nationalists. It comes complete with crypto and investments from the same venture capital networks funding Silicon Valley's dreams of exiting democracy."

As the market structure bill plods along, the crypto industry is already eyeing its next punchlist item: tax policy. The Solana Policy Institute penned a letter to President Trump on November 20 urging him to “promote tax clarity for the digital asset economy and American people”, including by creating a de minimis exemption for crypto transactions below $600, making blockchain development eligible for the research and development tax credit, and delaying rules that would require digital asset transactions be reported to the IRS and FinCEN in the same way as cash. The letter also included other requests that the president could achieve with the “stroke of a pen”41 — that is, without needing to go through Congress — including creating defi “safe harbors and sandboxes”, pressuring the SEC and CFTC to create exemptions for crypto, directing FinCEN to carve out non-custodial crypto projects from the Bank Secrecy Act,e and pushing the Justice Department to dismiss the two remaining charges against Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm [I90]. The letter was signed by 62 crypto groups, including Paradigm, various Solana entities, Uniswap, and others.42

Since Zhao’s pardon, Binance has ramped up its support for the Trump family’s USD1 stablecoin. The exchange announced a set of new no-fee trading pairs for USD1, meaning that people can now exchange their bitcoin, ether, or various other tokens for USD1 without paying fees for the privilege. Binance has also announced it will convert all assets backing its BUSD stablecoin into USD1. According to BUSD’s latest attestation, that’s more than $55 million that will be converted to USD138 — generating millions of dollars in interest for World Liberty between now and the end of Trump’s term if they maintain those USD1 holdings for that duration.c

As for Zhao’s role at Binance, Trump’s pardon doesn’t nullify the stipulation in Binance’s plea agreement that Zhao be prohibited from “any present or future involvement in operating or managing [Binance]”.39d But since Zhao’s release from prison, it’s been clear he remains closely involved with Binance’s operations. Now his influence is even harder to dispute, as his partner in life, parenthood, and business, Yi He, has been named co‑CEO of the exchange.40 She is also the co-founder and namesake of Zhao’s family office, YZi Labs.

In August, World Liberty Financial announced that it would create a WLFI treasury company using the Nasdaq-listed fintech firm, Alt5 Sigma [I90]. Eric Trump and fellow World Liberty executives Zach Witkoff and Zak Folkman were slated to join Alt5 Sigma’s board, although the Nasdaq later prohibited Eric Trump from joining the board due to the blatant conflict of interest, relegating him to “board observer” [I92].

The filing claims that the existence of the Rwandan court decision “and other matters” had not previously been disclosed to the board, and were unknown at the time of the World Liberty Financial deal. It’s not all good news for prediction markets, though, as they face multiple cease-and-desist orders and lawsuits from state gaming regulators. A federal court in Nevada issued a devastating ruling late last month that event contracts based on the outcomes of sports games are not swaps that would fall under the Commodity Exchange Act, and dissolving a preliminary injunction protecting Kalshi from civil or criminal action by the Nevada Gaming Control Board. Prediction markets have been relying on the swaps argument, maintaining that the CFTC’s oversight preempts the authority of state gambling commissions. Judge Andrew Gordon, in his ruling, rejected this, and added: “Licensed gaming companies have invested millions of dollars to comply with state regulations only to supposedly find out that they could have just become CFTC-registered exchanges to offer sports gambling nationwide for anyone over the age of 18 without complying with Nevada’s gaming regulatory regime or paying taxes in this state.”22

That is especially true because this Court and the CFTC warned Kalshi of the risks of expanding its business, and Kalshi went ahead and did it anyway. ... Kalshi has refused to make any good-faith effort to even attempt to comply with Nevada law. In contrast to Crypto.com and Robinhood, which entered into agreements with State Defendants to prevent enforcement, Kalshi flatly refused every option that State Defendants suggested, refused to propose any alternatives, and demanded that State Defendants stand down while it continues to aggressively expand its business.”24 Judge Gordon has not yet made a decision on the stay.

Much as you can no longer watch a hockey game without seeing a gambling advertisement every 13 seconds21, Kalshi prices will now appear beside news stories — inviting readers both to view them as probabilities, and encouraging them to place their own wagers. While there has been some research validating prediction markets’ accuracy in forecasting, most of this occurred prior to the explosion in uncapped betting, when bettors were limited to wagering small amounts in tightly-constrained academic experiments. Now, with so much money on the line and so much public attention on these markets, I suspect additional factors could influence their accuracy — from bettors attempting to arbitrage between different platforms, to people attempting to manipulate the perceived “odds” of an event to their advantage. The deal is probably a win-win for both Kalshi and the news groups: Kalshi gets the imprimatur of journalistic legitimacy, while CNN — fresh off layoffs — will enjoy an infusion of cash. The specific pricetag isn’t public, but Kalshi’s recent $1 billion raise suggests the platform isn’t exactly cash‑starved.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency has conditionally approved the first spate of national bank trust charter applications from five crypto companies: Circle (using an entity called First National Digital Currency Bank), Ripple, BitGo, Fidelity Digital Assets, and Paxos [I88, 95].11 These licenses don’t permit the firms to accept cash deposits or make loans, but they will allow them to hold customer assets. The approvals prompted objections from several banking groups, including the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, which wrote that “Today’s OCC announcement sends a dangerous message to the financial industry: break the law, harm consumers, and facilitate fraud—and you will be rewarded with a bank charter. ... Granting these cryptocurrency charters creates a new and frightful category of banks-in-name-only ... It will further enrich insiders in the crypto industry at the expense of the rest of us.”12

Do Kwon, founder of the collapsed Terra/Luna project, has been sentenced to fifteen years in prison — three more than the twelve years sought by prosecutors1a and well above the five requested by his defense.2 Judge Paul Engelmayer said the upward variance reflected the scale of Kwon’s fraud — both monetarily and in its more than one million victims — and Kwon’s decision to flee [I4], remaining at large for months before he was caught in Montenegro attempting to travel to Dubai on a fake passport [I23]. The disparity from fellow crypto fraudster Sam Bankman‑Fried’s 25‑year term likely stems from Kwon’s decision to plead guilty to two wire‑fraud counts, securing a deal in which prosecutors dropped seven other charges, rather than take the case to trial.

Investors drawn by supposedly “risk‑free” yields for holding “dollars” learned that Terra (UST) was not a dollar, and that the yields were anything but risk‑free. One victim who spoke at Kwon’s sentencing, a Russian woman living in the country of Georgia, explained that she had been living on the streets after her “$81,000 turned into $13 that I could hold in the palm of my hand.” Other victims described suicides of friends who had invested in Terra, their own thoughts of ending their lives, families breaking up, postponed retirements and schooling, the inability to pay medical bills, and lives ruined.3 I purchased the PACER documents so that anyone can read the victim impact statements for themselves, and highlighted some of them.

Before sentencing, Judge Engelmayer asked about likely outcomes there, including the likely sentence length if he is convicted and whether it would run concurrently with any US sentence. Prosecutors reported they had limited insight but noted that Korean sentencing could range from six years to indefinite; however, Korea has never imposed indefinite terms for fraud offenses, sentences of 30 or more years are rare, and courts frequently depart below prosecutorial recommendations. They also noted that any sentence imposed in Korea would be reduced by the amount of time he serves in the US.4 Engelmeyer ultimately included a requirement that Kwon serve at least half of his fifteen-year sentence in the US before he can apply for a transfer to South Korea.5

The attacks on Europe I've seen here the last couple of days, including from people I've generally considered interesting and sophisticated, have been getting unhinged...

I get that EU has problems - GDPR clickthroughs are dumb, Chat Control is awful, they need to be less bureaucratic and supportive toward entrepreneurs, its kindness toward Ukraine often doesn't extend well to Gaza or Sudan or other places, people saying mean things about criminals getting longer sentences than the criminals is just crazy - but the apocalyptic attitude about the issues, evoking imagery of barbarians pillaging Rome etc, seems really over the top.

It feels more like a coordinated attempt to delegitimize than constructive criticism.

(I don't believe the line that "the target is not Europe, it's the EU": I've seen many instances of London specifically being targeted in the hate session, so no, much of it is an attack on Europe)

It just does not match my experience from spending an average of two months every year there for the last decade.

I ask you to look beyond the cold, hard numbers (i.e., the staggering sum of money that vanished) and see the human cost and lifelong agony that UST's depegging has caused. I am asking you to read these words not with professional detachment, but with the empathy I pray resides within the heart of any person witnessing such profound devastation. I remember the exact moment. It was May 2022, several days after my birthday. Suddenly, I saw a notification flash across my screen: UST had depegged from its $1 parity. In an instant, the value of everything I had worked for, everything my father had saved for, just obliterated into nothing. The shock was a physical blow. I felt my breath leave my body. Your Honor, I didn't think about my own savings at first. The first thought, the only thought, was of my father. And that is what almost drove me to end my own life. I did not consider taking my life over my own money loss, but over the catastrophic failure I brought upon my father...the man who deserved the world. He put $100k of his retirement savings into Anchor Protocol (due to my advice)...and now he is over 70 years old and he cannot fully retire. Because if he stops working, he can no longer afford to live. My father is a good man

I had never invested serious money prior to Luna but after being educated on the Terra Luna ecosystem by a family member, I was completely on board with the stability and efficiency of the blockchain. I invested countless hours of my time listening to podcasts and watching videos learning how to make the most of my investments. The more time I invested the more money I invested. I invested in new protocols on the system and my days were consumed with all things Terra. I shared my knowledge with friends and family, wanting them to also be part of something great. I was convinced that I was on the ground level of something big and that I would be providing generational wealth for my family. I ended up withdrawing over 100,000 from my 401k and paying the early withdrawal penalty fees because I believed in the long term success of Terra. I never took any profits on the money I had invested. I lost everything in the collapse. When the collapse was happening I still had faith in Luna and was actually still trying to purchase more Luna. I am still in debt over the poor decisions I made during that time, due to my beliefs in the greatness of the ecosystem. The price started recovering that day. I trusted him again and decided to keep the UST locked. What followed were two weeks of pure terror. The Terra blockchain halted. I lost approximately €40,000 as a direct result of the collapse of the Terraform ecosystem. This loss created a devastating chain of consequences for me and my family. The money I invested had been carefully saved over time to pay for my son’s planned wedding, which took place in September. When the funds disappeared, I was suddenly unable to cover those expenses. I had to borrow money from friends and relatives, causing deep personal embarrassment and significant tension within my family. The financial impact did not stop there. In desperation, I also borrowed money from my employer, hoping to recover enough to repay the loan. Because the amount was large and I was unable to meet the repayment schedule, I ultimately lost my job. Losing both my savings and my employment in such a short period created immense emotional and psychological stress. I have experienced severe anxiety, sleeplessness, and a constant sense of guilt and shame. These problems have affected my daily life and my relationships with the people I love. Even today, writing about this experience is extremely painful for me. The consequences of this financial disaster have marked my life deeply and continue to affect my family’s stability and well-being.

I am writing in regards to the upcoming sentencing of Do Kwon on December 11th. I have never written anything like this or as a man and a father, I hate to set myself up to be called a "victim." The truth of the matter, it was not only I that was the victim, but my family as well. And knowing the ripple effect (that will last for generations) from the choices and negligence this man and the Terraform Team made, it would be wrong of me not to add my 2 cents. So for my family's sake, I will tell how the events played out in my Household. In March of 2022, as I had a significant amount of wealth in the markets and sensed a bit of volatility coming, I decided to place a large portion of my portfolio into a stablecoin, pegged to the US Dollar. In doing research on the best most reliable stablecoin, came UST and the Terraform Labs Team as one of the frontrunners. My decision to place over $200k into UST did not come lightly or did I ever think it was a speculative decision associated with any risk. It was a calculated decision based on the words of a man that was at the forefront of innovation and a Team that had one of the largest blockchains available at the time with Luna at their backing. Again, the funds allocated to UST were not gambling or speculative, they were tucked away in a "savings" account, pegged to the dollar, to be put

“fixes” the main issue with bitcoin, at least for people like Jeffrey Epstein. Zcash transactions are encrypted / private and therefore nothing about them is publicly visible in a block explorer (and therefore any suspicious large transactions would not even be noticed).

ZCash, (unlike / , its prime competitor in the “privacy coin” space), is not an open source project. It’s privatized secret money created by a corporation. That corporation also just so happens to have been funded by DCG, the crypto VC fund Larry Summers sat on the board of for 7 years after being introduced to Brock Pierce by Jeffrey Epstein. ZCash is actually one of ’s flagship investments 🤔

Hard not to think that Epstein wasn’t meeting with to make a few “feature requests” that would make more useful for people like Jeffrey .

(it’s also worth at least mentioning that all of the cryptoverse’s biggest cretins like the twins, Naval, Emperor Shillbertine, etc. started pushing ZCash HARD a month or two ago as the “true” bitcoin, but that’s probably a subject for a separate post)

Madars Virza

I am a Research Scientist at MIT Media Lab where I work with Joi Ito on cryptocurrencies (at the Digital Currency Initiative) and Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (at the Ethics Initiative).

I co-invented Zerocash and co-founded Zcash. Both of these rely on libsnark, the efficient C++ library for zero-knowledge proofs, that I am an author of.

I recently graduated with Ph.D. in Computer Science from MIT, where I was fortunate to be advised by incomparable Ron Rivest. My Ph.D. thesis, also on libsnark, won the George M. Sprowls Award for Best MIT Ph.D. Thesis in Computer Science. Before coming to MIT I did my undergraduate work at University of Latvia under the excellent guidance of Andris Ambainis.

The best way to reach me is: madars@mit.edu. You can also send me physical mail but due to COVID-19 I am not checking my mailbox too regularly.

Governments have been bought and sold by rich vested interests for years.
