It looks like Iran has successfully built a national 'walled garden' to control internet connectivity - both halting outsiders from communicating with those in Iran who are protesting, but also halting Iranians' ability to access the world wide web's myriad resources.

How well this 'wall' can be maintained remains to be seen but authoritarian regimes around the world will be watching, that's for sure.

Plenty of good things happened, and most of the good was personal, which is its own kind of blessing. So for me, the year wasn’t bad at all, as long as I avoided looking at the news. Here’s to a happy 2026 🍷.

I got out of bed in time for my morning nap, but skipped it in favor of coming in here and writing to you. No worries — that nap will find me eventually.

It just occurred to me that 21st‑century folks really missed out on dial‑up internet. Oh, they were alive, but not yet part of the online world; they were still reaching for the grab toys in their cribs. They never truly experienced the “krrr–krrr–WHEEEEeee–chk–chk–SKREEE–shhhhh…” of a modem handshake. Those were the days — exciting, but slow. You remember waiting for an image to download, watching it materialize pixel by pixel on a cathode‑ray‑tube monitor. It felt like magic.

And with those early telephone modems, as you recall, we had to choose between using the internet or using the telephone — unless you were fancy enough to have two phone lines, which most of us weren’t. Cell phones existed, but they weren’t quite a thing yet. That would come soon enough.

Today we carry the internet in our back pockets, and sometimes even on our wrists like a super Dick Tracy watch. It’s worth noting that many 21st‑century folks turned 25 this year. When I was 25, the internet and handheld computers were still the stuff of science‑fiction dreams.

The Wall Street Journal Applauds Republicans’ Corrupt, Illegal Theft Of Billions In Taxpayer Dollars

Tue, Dec 30th 2025 05:27am - Karl Bode

I’ve written repeatedly about how Republicans effectively rewrote the 2021 infrastructure bill (they voted against) to ensure that billions of dollars in taxpayer-funded broadband grants (intended to be spent on affordable, next-generation fiber) was stolen from local communities, and instead given to Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos for expensive, congested satellite service.

I’ve also explained in detail why that’s a problem: These networks may be initially cheaper to deploy, but the networks lack the capacity to actually scale to meet demand. Data indicates they harm astronomy research and the ozone layer. They’re ultimately more expensive for consumers than fiber deployments, especially if those fiber deployments are by cooperatives or community owned.

In short, taxpayer money directed toward Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk is also money directed away from higher-capacity, faster, locally-owned (and usually cheaper) fiber and wireless alternatives. And it’s money given to billionaires for technology they already had deployed or would have deployed anyway. It’s a coordinated hijacking of taxpayer money that will actually undermine affordable internet access.

Enter the Wall Street Journal editorial board, which aggressively lies about all of this all of this in a new, comically terrible editorial....

                                                                                                            1 internet that is corporate, AI-filled, without privacy, browseable only with Chrome and Firefox;

1 internet that exists of stuff like the Fediverse, personal websites, and is usable with FF forks and older browsers.

These worlds will grow apart over time, and with the second category of browser, we will not be able to visit the corporate sphere anymore; the big platforms, online stores, maybe also things like WordPress sites, and notably, this will also include governmental sites and banking sites.

In the corporate browsers, we are always identified, logged, tracked. VPN and ad blockers will be banned. In short, government and corporations (which is becoming the same thing in the west, yay ) will have full control here.

Most people will fall in line and reluctantly keep using the corporate browsers, while a smaller group will move to the "alternative internet" altogether, on which and doesn't take place. (we're already here! yay!)

We end up being forced to use the corporate browser for some stuff that you can hardly get around - government, banking, contact with normies - not unlike how living without smartphone feels today.

So, just like it is living without a smartphone, I see us non-compliant people using some second device with the corporate browser, to manage that kind of stuff, while steering clear from it in daily life. (at most workplaces though, people will have no choice.)

These are my thoughts on which direction the internet seems to be going. At one hand, I wouldn't mind the internet splitting into two, so I can evade the corporate part.

But my problem lies with the part where we kinda can't get around having to go into the corporate sphere regularly, forced by majority culture as well as governments, which will be all too happy to have everyone nicely identifiable and compliant.

It can get really bad if the good part of the internet becomes outlawed, and that might well happen if we keep living under corporate/neolib/authoritarian governments. (talking about "the west" in general, not just the US)

Reliable information about the distant past is scanty and, especially in this decadent era of intense corporate corruption of the and , popular knowledge of history is profoundly imperfect and apt to be mythologized and conflated with fantasy. Authentic fiction about ancient times is tough to write, tough to research adequately; it's far easier to fall back upon purely imaginative and speculative writing, whatever appeals to the prejudices of the commercial marketplace.

Hence the spurious notion of authenticity brought to bear by defenders of and G. R. R. Martin and other writers is, unfortunately, simply an artifact of defective knowledge, lazy historigraphy and facile fiction-writing. A dull whitebread depiction of the ancient past ends up blending seamlessly into the general assumptions applied to popular fantasy writing set vaguely in "the past". Fantasy and corrupted history end up informing each other, and the true subtlety and diversity of history is lost.

It's thoroughly tested, stability is rock solid, sane, and it stays out of the way. The , the Social Contract, the of the organization, and their to are also important reasons why I use it.

One of the longtime challenges I've had with it, however, is documentation. It is outdated and spotty. Finding information often requires , digging through the , scattered wikis, old mailing lists, forums, and blog posts. It makes solving problems needlessly difficult. For this reason I have been leaning towards . Technical and philosophical Differences aside, FreeBSD's documentation is excellent. The FreeBSD Handbook is widely regarded to be the go-to documentation source, particularly for new users. The team definitely deserves the credit.

The Debian Administrator's Handbook exists but it's not official and, like some other official manuals, is out of date. Cryptic man pages, however, are still the default documentation format though the reasons for that are both historical and cultural. Both Debian and FreeBSD started in 1993 when these systems were limited to extremely technical people and man pages were canon. Anything in HTML or PDF were considered "bonus." But, as these projects became more widely adopted, the culture of documentation shifted.

These days reading 30 different man pages and then engineering a solution is archaic and borderline unreasonable. HTML/PDF guides on hardening, virtualization, system tuning, and various reference manuals, step by step tutorials, cookbooks, and videos are the norm and significantly improve the accessibility of the OS as well as support people with different learning styles. The enterprise space isn't any different.

I am NOT faulting Debian. The sheer scale of the project is mind-boggling. Maintaining centralized up to date documentation of this magnitude requires significant organizational change and modernization....and it's required. The days of "RTFM!" are long gone, replaced by empathy, collaboration, and psychological safety and a new generation of users accustomed to different learning styles.

Even with these challenges, it's still my favorite OS. If you want to learn Linux, then seriously check out Debian. It's stable, mature, consistent, the community is great, and it's a solid foundation for technical projects.

That’s just my opinion of course. But if you really wanted to tackle on-line bullying and curtail the hate, the racism, the disinformation, misinformation, and general toxicity that is prevalent on platforms, you’d need to do more than just reform and strengthen . Digital media is just like radio/TV/paper media with more functionality and reach which are worldwide (more or less depending on country of publication/broadcast). Hence, to hit the mark, this new govt legislation ought to have been a set of imposed on digital media (of every kind) with penalties for failure to comply to have any meaningful benefits to society and its younger people.
