It looks like Iran has successfully built a national 'walled garden' to control internet connectivity - both halting outsiders from communicating with those in Iran who are protesting, but also halting Iranians' ability to access the world wide web's myriad resources.
How well this 'wall' can be maintained remains to be seen but authoritarian regimes around the world will be watching, that's for sure.

Every day billions of people use the open standards and technologies developed in the IETF. And nearly 8000 volunteer IETF participants from around the world collaborate in more than 100 working groups evolving those open standards and making the Internet work better!

New #Linux #malware is making its way around the #Internet. Dubbed #VoidLink, it targets #cloud environments and then vanishes. It targets #AWS, #Azure, #GCP, and a host of others.
Less of a tool and more of a platform with various plugins, VoidLink can do reconnaissance, credential theft, and abuse containers. Additionally it *also* detects tampering and malware analysis tools. It can delete itself and remove traces of its activity.
As if the 'net isn't dangerous enough.

This is a great discussion around #InternetGovernance, the #UN, the recent #WSIS +20 review, the importance of #InternetAccess, and in general about what's at stake for the future of the #Internet if we don't get this right... if you have 40 minutes, I recommend giving it a listen!

Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf made the threat after nationwide #protests challenging Iran’s #theocracy saw protesters flood the streets in the country’s capital & its 2nd-largest city into Sunday morning, crossing the 2-week mark. At least 203 people have died in #violence surrounding the #demonstrations, activists said, with fears the death toll is far higher.
With the #internet down in #Iran & #phone lines cut off, gauging the demonstrations from abroad has grown more difficult.
Demonstrators have continued to take to the streets of #Iran,
defying an escalating crackdown by authorities against the growing #protest movement.
An #internet #shutdown imposed by the authorities on Thursday has largely cut the protesters off from the rest of the world,
but videos that trickled out of the country showed thousands of people demonstrating in Tehran overnight into Saturday morning.
They chanted:
💥“Death to Khamenei,”
in reference to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and:
💥“Long live the shah.”
New protests broke out late on Saturday
with people rallying in a northern district of Tehran, according to a video verified by AFP.
recent events in #iran made me wonder, if there was an #android #foss app that creates an #ad-hoc #wifi #mesh with other devices nearby that could than be used for a #chat and #groupchat #app like #briar by a #mass of #protesters within wifi distance of each other to communicate even in case of an #internet #blackout ?

Good morning. 🥳🎉🎊
31 December 2025
Well, here we are — the last day of 2025. What can I say about the year except: wow, let’s not do that again. Not really, though. Plenty of good things happened, and most of the good was personal, which is its own kind of blessing. So for me, the year wasn’t bad at all, as long as I avoided looking at the news. Here’s to a happy 2026 🍷.
I got out of bed in time for my morning nap, but skipped it in favor of coming in here and writing to you. No worries — that nap will find me eventually.
It just occurred to me that 21st‑century folks really missed out on dial‑up internet. Oh, they were alive, but not yet part of the online world; they were still reaching for the grab toys in their cribs. They never truly experienced the “krrr–krrr–WHEEEEeee–chk–chk–SKREEE–shhhhh…” of a modem handshake. Those were the days — exciting, but slow. You remember waiting for an image to download, watching it materialize pixel by pixel on a cathode‑ray‑tube monitor. It felt like magic.
And with those early telephone modems, as you recall, we had to choose between using the internet or using the telephone — unless you were fancy enough to have two phone lines, which most of us weren’t. Cell phones existed, but they weren’t quite a thing yet. That would come soon enough.
Today we carry the internet in our back pockets, and sometimes even on our wrists like a super Dick Tracy watch. It’s worth noting that many 21st‑century folks turned 25 this year. When I was 25, the internet and handheld computers were still the stuff of science‑fiction dreams.

I wish y'all a good and healthy, better and more optimistic new year 2026 and am ready to bury 2025 in the past - an average year but a year with (at least) a gleam of hope for the better of mankind. You rule! 🫶🏻🤘🏻 🖤 🍀

So, with #Firefox becoming a slop browser, I think I can see where we're going. We are going to have 2 internets;
1 internet that is corporate, AI-filled, without privacy, browseable only with Chrome and Firefox;
1 internet that exists of stuff like the Fediverse, personal websites, and is usable with FF forks and older browsers.
These worlds will grow apart over time, and with the second category of browser, we will not be able to visit the corporate sphere anymore; the big platforms, online stores, maybe also things like WordPress sites, and notably, this will also include governmental sites and banking sites.
In the corporate browsers, we are always identified, logged, tracked. VPN and ad blockers will be banned. In short, government and corporations (which is becoming the same thing in the west, yay #neoliberalism ) will have full control here.
Most people will fall in line and reluctantly keep using the corporate browsers, while a smaller group will move to the "alternative internet" altogether, on which #enshittification and #ensloppification doesn't take place. (we're already here! yay!)
We end up being forced to use the corporate browser for some stuff that you can hardly get around - government, banking, contact with normies - not unlike how living without smartphone feels today.
So, just like it is living without a smartphone, I see us non-compliant people using some second device with the corporate browser, to manage that kind of stuff, while steering clear from it in daily life. (at most workplaces though, people will have no choice.)
These are my thoughts on which direction the internet seems to be going. At one hand, I wouldn't mind the internet splitting into two, so I can evade the corporate part.
But my problem lies with the part where we kinda can't get around having to go into the corporate sphere regularly, forced by majority culture as well as governments, which will be all too happy to have everyone nicely identifiable and compliant.
It can get really bad if the good part of the internet becomes outlawed, and that might well happen if we keep living under corporate/neolib/authoritarian governments. (talking about "the west" in general, not just the US)
If you’re wondering what the Internet has become, Cloudflare Radar offers a good overview. In the top 10, there’s nothing outside the large conglomerates. I hope we can change this trend over the next 10 years.

There's a subtler issue at work here: the heavy degree of crosstalk between #fantasy and the dramatization and popularization of #history. Reliable information about the distant past is scanty and, especially in this decadent era of intense corporate corruption of the #Internet and #education, popular knowledge of history is profoundly imperfect and apt to be mythologized and conflated with fantasy. Authentic fiction about ancient times is tough to write, tough to research adequately; it's far easier to fall back upon purely imaginative and speculative writing, whatever appeals to the prejudices of the commercial marketplace.
Hence the spurious notion of authenticity brought to bear by defenders of #Tolkien and G. R. R. Martin and other writers is, unfortunately, simply an artifact of defective knowledge, lazy historigraphy and facile fiction-writing. A dull whitebread depiction of the ancient past ends up blending seamlessly into the general assumptions applied to popular fantasy writing set vaguely in "the past". Fantasy and corrupted history end up informing each other, and the true subtlety and diversity of history is lost.

As tech pundit Jeff Jarvis wrote in 2009, “small is the new big.” He wrote that “a tiny start-up can become a manufacturing company using somebody else’s factory and distribution while selling to a worldwide market. […] Any of us can start a highly specialized and targeted media company using blog software. […] The Lilliputians have triumphed. The economies of scale must now compete with the economies of small.”

Not so long ago, in the early 2000s, we lived in an age of extraordinary optimism about the Internet and what it would do for all of us. It would interconnect all humanity, give everyone a creative outlet, and make democracy blossom around the world. Economically and socially, it would empower the little guys—favor entrepreneurial individuals—at the expense of faceless corporations.

For decades, #Debian has been my go-to for #Linux and operating systems in general. It's thoroughly tested, stability is rock solid, sane, and it stays out of the way. The #community, the Social Contract, the #transparency of the organization, and their #commitment to #diversity are also important reasons why I use it.
One of the longtime challenges I've had with it, however, is documentation. It is outdated and spotty. Finding information often requires #clairvoyance, digging through the #Internet, scattered wikis, old mailing lists, forums, and blog posts. It makes solving problems needlessly difficult. For this reason I have been leaning towards #FreeBSD. Technical and philosophical Differences aside, FreeBSD's documentation is excellent. The FreeBSD Handbook is widely regarded to be the go-to documentation source, particularly for new users. The team definitely deserves the credit.
The Debian Administrator's Handbook exists but it's not official and, like some other official manuals, is out of date. Cryptic man pages, however, are still the default documentation format though the reasons for that are both historical and cultural. Both Debian and FreeBSD started in 1993 when these systems were limited to extremely technical people and man pages were canon. Anything in HTML or PDF were considered "bonus." But, as these projects became more widely adopted, the culture of documentation shifted.
These days reading 30 different man pages and then engineering a solution is archaic and borderline unreasonable. HTML/PDF guides on hardening, virtualization, system tuning, and various reference manuals, step by step tutorials, cookbooks, and videos are the norm and significantly improve the accessibility of the OS as well as support people with different learning styles. The enterprise space isn't any different.
I am NOT faulting Debian. The sheer scale of the project is mind-boggling. Maintaining centralized up to date documentation of this magnitude requires significant organizational change and modernization....and it's required. The days of "RTFM!" are long gone, replaced by empathy, collaboration, and psychological safety and a new generation of users accustomed to different learning styles.
Even with these challenges, it's still my favorite OS. If you want to learn Linux, then seriously check out Debian. It's stable, mature, consistent, the community is great, and it's a solid foundation for technical projects.
Statt "#Ausweispflicht im #Internet" sollte die @EUCommission & @Europarl_DE lieber mal #AdBlocker verpflichtend enführen, weil das ist nicht nur #jugendschutz sondern auch #Verbraucherschutz!

The IFF is, thankfully, taking umbrage at Australia’s #AgeVerification legislation which came into force yesterday, and rightly so. However, with statements such as:
“If legislators want to meaningfully improve online safety, they should pass a strong, comprehensive federal privacy law instead of building new systems of surveillance, censorship, and exclusion.“

It’s missing the mark, not really providing a solution to the targeted problem, and may just cloud the issue (confusing parents/guardians mainly) while giving our polies a free pass. That’s just my opinion of course. But if you really wanted to tackle on-line bullying and curtail the hate, the racism, the disinformation, misinformation, and general toxicity that is prevalent on #TechBros platforms, you’d need to do more than just reform and strengthen #PrivacyLaws. Digital media is just like radio/TV/paper media with more functionality and reach which are #regulated worldwide (more or less depending on country of publication/broadcast). Hence, to hit the mark, this new govt legislation ought to have been a set of #Regulations imposed on digital media (of every kind) with penalties for failure to comply to have any meaningful benefits to society and its younger people.
Of course, more regulations is not what the IFF stands for, so no surprises there. Saying that, I do believe that the IFF does important work and is to be commended for that.
There are alternatives to BigTech platforms which are #safer more #inclusive already deployed on the #internet. And if our govt was truly looking after the health of our kids, then govt departments who have the #DutyOfCare to keep our kids safe could #Fund #instances of #Mastodon on the #Fediverse for #kids run by kids with oversight by health professionals as #Moderators — a glaringly obvious solution that no one is talking about (outside the fediverse that is).

Die EU-Staaten fordern ein neues Gesetz zur #Vorratsdatenspeicherung, das weit über die alten Gesetze hinausgeht. Das geht aus einem #EU-Dokument hervor, das wir veröffentlichen.
