What is the difference between #Bluesky and #Mastodon? Is it mostly just a rivalry thing between both platforms or is bluesky genuinely toxic, as Mastodonians say? I don't know what to believe.

@NicksWorld There's a few technical differences but the main difference is philosophical.

#Bluesky is essentially just another corporate social network. It's owned by a private company, founded by a billionaire, and like all businesses it will ultimately want to try to make money, either through accepting advertisements or asking users to pay for extra features.

#Mastodon (and the wider #Fediverse) is not owned by anyone. It exists because thousands and thousands of individuals have all set up their own separate servers that all know how to talk to each other. There is no overall policy or goal (which is why sometimes server admins fall out & defederate from each other) but that also means it's impossible for corporate interests to buy or control Mastodon as a whole.

I've been wondering about Bluesky's decentralization again. I can't think of any reason why I'd want to self-host Bluesky in its current form. I cannot 100% self host "my own Bluesky".

Their main selling points for building their own protocol were easier migration and better discoverability, but right now there's no simple way to migrate my Bluesky account to my own instance. And hosting the centralized parts yourself isn't really possible, or if it were, not affordable, they haven't made that feasible, by design, it seems.

Even if you self-host a PDS, Bluesky's Relay only indexes up to 10 accounts from it. You can run more, but they won't federate, the central infrastructure decides what gets seen. They control this (source: https://docs.bsky.app/blog/self-host-federation#:~:text=For%20a%20smooth%20transition%20into,for%20everyone%20in%20the%20ecosystem.). You can self-host a PDS (Personal Data Server), but you still depend on Bluesky's centralized Relay and AppView. There's no production-ready alternative infrastructure from what I gather.

It feels like I'd be renting a room in a hotel that someone else is running anyway, when I want my own hotel.

If Mastodon gGmbH vanishes tomorrow, my instance keeps running and federating with everyone else. If Bluesky PBC vanishes, the ecosystem would need to scramble to stand up replacement infrastructure that doesn't really exist yet.

ATProto keeps getting evaluated on its promises while other systems get evaluated on their merits. The "portability" selling point depends on infrastructure that isn't mature enough to actually catch you if Bluesky falls.

I trust W3C, the builders and fathers of the World Wide Web, ActivityPub and the Fediverse.

Today I woke up with another node down. The one with reverse proxy. The PC was powered off for some reason at the time we had electricity. The voltage was fine, there were also no temperature anomalies reported. It just powered itself off. Maybe it just got tired, I don’t know.
So all my #selfhosted services were down for 4.5 hours except this #Mastodon instance. Because it has its own reverse proxy and was placed on the last surviving node.

No conclusions yet, I need to think 🤔

• Podcast Feed do canal @[email protected] é devidamente reconhecido em todos os testes. Inclusive, perfeitamente incluído no Podcast Index. O problema é que, embora o episódio tenha sido criado com base no envio de um arquivo áudio (Ogg/Opus), o PeerTube fez, obrigatoriamente, sua conversão para vídeo. Torna-se videocast, então. É possível usá-lo assim mesmo, porém não fica exatamente como alguém esperaria um podcast de áudio.
• Feed da comunidade @[email protected] é reconhecido por agregadores. O grande porém é que o Lemmy não permite envio de arquivo de áudio, apenas imagem. Fiz o teste simplesmente inserindo a URL do áudio que eu já tinha enviado para outro servidor, com o discurso completo da Promulgação da Constituição por Ulysses Guimarães. Funcionou assim, mas fica inviável.

De imediato, ainda pode ser menos frustrante hospedar podcast em um sistema já preparado para isso, como 🐳 Funkwhale ou CastoPod.

People may suggest that you use hashtags as a universal "tool" for getting things into your timeline.

This might give the impression that once you start following tags you will get ALL the content for this tag, across the entire federated entirety of instances.

That is NOT the case.

The instance you are on only knows what it knows, ie. it can only tell you about toots that it has seen.

What this means is that in order for a server to know about toots you, or someone else on the instance, has to be following someone so that there is a mechanism for toots to be sent to your instance.

There is also this thing called Relays, which is pretty much what it sounds like. A relay, once you are connected to one will forward all toots it has seen to your instance. (This is an admin/instance feature and cannot be configured by a regular user!)

Long story short. Hashtags are not magical wands that will make all the toots appear in your timeline. It will simply pull toots your instance knows about into your timeline.

There are pros and cons to this, but it is the essence of federation and an important topic to understand.

It's usually deplatforming. From white admins who defederate you without a sensible reason to the whole of their instance users (where you do have friends) to targeted blocks in common lists.

It does happen.

It's being silenced. Similar to shadow banning. If no one sees your toots you go away. There's no interaction.

I guarantee you even writing this toot will make some consider doing so to this account. And the only way I'd notice is months down the line when I wonder: how come I haven't seen a toot from my friend Haven in ages ?

The software as it is, protects the admins, not the user.

oh ok so *here's* a neat feature of #Mastodon lists that I had hitherto been unaware of:

You can set them to include replies from list members to:
- No one
- Members of the List
- Any followed user

This is REALLY COOL. The 🤯 option for me personally is to be able to include only replies that members of the list sent to other members of the list. Great for "Local" lists, or lists for a busy topic bubble!

You can also change this setting later!

My top tip for getting into Mastodon is:

1) Make a post that says "hi, I'm interested in..." followed by like 10 hashtags about your interests.

2) Click and follow all the hashtags in your post.

3) People will boost your post and it'll go further because of the hashtags, due to the nature of the fediverse. Follow all the people who boost you; you can unfollow later if it's too many people.

I've been reading a lot of your content and really appreciate all of the work you are doing to advocate for the #Fediverse.

You have also promoted healthy Fediverse cultural norms, like aiding #accessibility.

In that vein, I would like to ask you to lend your voice to an issue that affects visually impaired people.

You have mentioned #CamelCase, which many are using along with #AltText. However, the official #Mastodon client as well as web Mastodon makes it more difficult to use CamelCase, because they often auto-"correct" the CamelCase to simply lower case. One has to be aware of putting space after the typed #hashtag, or else Mastodon changes it to all lower case.

There are a number of bug reports about this in Github (with various scenarios), so it is a known issue.

If you could look into it and then speak up about it, perhaps the issue would get some priority.

A small group of us (Note: really, really small) are in early discussions on how to encourage our government - individual politicians & federal, provincial, and municipal departments - to move their social media presence to Mastodon. This would involve an awareness campaign targeting politicians, party HQs, and departments/agencies.
We are asking for input from admins to help us create a future state vision for this project, and provide us with advice or ideas on how to bring it to a reality. So, looking into this a bit more, it seems that it's because the language-filter settings only apply to public timelines - not your home/personal timeline.

Which sucks. I don't use public timelines; my personal timeline is enough of a firehose already, thank you very much. Which is why I wanted to filter out posts in languages I don't understand. These posts get into my timeline because lots of hashtags are used by posters in many different languages, even if the words they're based on are English (or whatever) words.

Looking in the #Mastodon repository, there are lots of bug reports / issues / feature requests for exactly what I was hoping for here. Some date back five years or more.

Given how badly this lack of filtering impacts a busy personal timeline, I'm kind of surprised there's been no action on any of these reports.

I made my first toot a few hours ago and came back with a warm welcome and some good tips. Thanks everyone!

I actually don't use social media much. I'm kinda wary about how people can get addicted to it and how their viewpoint become distorted. Not to mention how the big social media companies take advantage that and people's privacy.

But sometimes I just want to talk to someone who has the same hobbies as I do and get why I'm so enthusiastic about it and talking to my friends isn't always the option.
#Mastodon and maybe the rest of the fediverse seem like a good place to that.

I'm into #games, #literature (mostly #fantasy and #SciFi), #tech and #tea.

Servers described as "Glitch Mastodon" or "Hometown Mastodon" work just like Mastodon but have additional features such as larger post sizes, rich text formatting or local-only posts.

Snac

Compared to Friendica, its featureset is basic at best. But compared to other Fediverse tools like #mastodon it does not fare so bad. But how usable is it as an alternative to my peronal Friendica use.

The good stuff

• Setup is really easy for anyone who has self-hosted any services before. The documentation in manpage format might be old school but it is very complete - read it. If you're on Debian you can even use the package from trixie-backports which is kept very current!

• It shows the timeline chronologically but with nested threads. This is the only way that makes sense to me and is exactly what I use in Friendica (where different settings are available). This means every new activity on a thread brings it up again (partly collapsed) so you always see the necessary context to follow conversations. For me this is the most important feature, I would not even have continued testing without it. Snac just does it right!

• It has the looks! Well at least after applying some stylesheets. Calling the vanilla install basic would already be an overstatement. But have a look at the styles that are linked from snac's Reaedme. I chose the next.css style and have attached an image of how it looks below. The screenshot is from an Android phone and this works remarkably well, even on mobile (some caveats below)!

• It's compatible with Mastodon apps. I have only tested #Fedilab because I use it for other stuff too. Everything just works as expected. Although I have to admit, I like the native Web-UI (next.css) even more.

• Long Text with Markdown formatting. 500 character per Toot - No thank you, I am not chatting here!

What is missing (or is it?)

• There is only the timeline and you can follow Hashtags, that's it. No Channels, no groups, no theme-specific timelines. But honestly, I did not use any of that on Friendica, mainly for performance reasons. So this is a non-issue for me personally.

• Following RSS feeds. This feature I will really miss. In Friendica I could direclty follow Feeds and interact with them from my timeline exactly like with ActivityPub Notes or Articles. I will have to use an external translation service or write my own for that (having written an ActivityPub related tool with tootgroup.py before.)

• Message formatting is somewhat less flexible but this post shows what is possible still. Sometimes I like to put images in between paragraphs but not having that is also not a big deal.

• Event Calendar. This is not a feature I expect Snac to support but I do use it on Friendica and will have to think about how to replace it.

What could be improved

I have already stated how great the mobile experience is when using the next.css stylesheet. The only downside is that I have to login with username/password again and again, every time the mobile browser is sent to sleep by Android.

Optionally enabling the use of a login cookie would make life much easier. Even better would be enabling Snac to be installed as a Progressive Web App, but I have to admit, I'm not sure how hard or feasible this would be.

Overall, I do not see many shortcomings with Snac. Obviously it offers less features than Friendica, but what it does, it does very well and at least in my view, the important stuff is exactly where it needs to be.

Conclusion

Adding [email protected] because maybe you're interested. Please don't treat this as a feature-request or even critizism. It's mostly meant as info for people who have not tried snac yet.

I desperately seek some workgroup to join, where we would exchange the bogus mailserver lists on daily basis, so we can prevent even registration attempts.

The botnet no longer cares exclusively about Ukraine, pro Russia, but it does lot of random thing. The copied fragments of auto-translated texts include labels of various navigation links, so it is immediate obvious, that the content is machine generated. Also, the IP addresses repeat, so they don't have quite unlimited IP pool.

Most instances solve this problem by limiting registrations, but I am advocating rather for cautious growth of Fediverse, like eg. 10 times of current size. I was told, that "cool things don't need advertising", so I suggest: let's make Fediverse cool. Instead of banning more or less stable, determined and closed social bubbles from interacting, let's rather learn to cooperate and trust each other while hunting botnets like this...

I joined #mastodon last week, on a whim, with no idea what to expect

Minutes later, I was welcomed by @dillyd which has never happened on any other platform and was a wonderful introduction. So I posted a couple pictures of my #cats, and found, to my surprise, people reacting and interacting
