Perhaps this need to be added as an option because it makes it non HTML5 conformant: self-closing is now allowed in HTML5. Also there are tags that should be never closed

I agree. Maybe this should be a top level configuration option for the generated HTML output.

Maybe appendHTML could take an

XHTMLOutput: Boolean = false

parameter. If it is set to true explicitly by the user, than we would close the tag using />.

Yes, this is the best option. However I am not sure if it is the only xml compatibility issue.
