Revert a65df18.

For some reason I was thinking that g_freelist is an atomic list
when it is not.  It's only ever accessed by the main thread,
and the whole reason that g_gc_list exists is so that can be
the case.

Update a comment.

Cosmetic changes.

Build as C++20.
