Summary

I think it's a good improvement for us and the users, so that possible WIP rules have a issue hub where users can provide feedback.

The issue number is totally optional and up to the owner of the rule

Test Plan

Green CI

Docs

I will follow up with a PR on the website too. I updated the contribution guide

Walkthrough

Adds an optional issue_number: Option<&'static str> field to RuleMetadata with a builder method. Diagnostics rendering now appends a note linking to the issue when present. Contributor docs gain a “Mark a rule as a work in progress” section describing issue_number usage. Two JS nursery rules (noUnnecessaryConditions, useSortedClasses) are annotated with issue numbers. The xtask rules check now errors if a rule has an issue_number but is not in the nursery group.

✅ Passed checks (2 passed)
Check name Status Explanation
Title check ✅ Passed The title 'chore(analyzer): improve diagnostics' is partially related to the changeset—it mentions improving diagnostics, which aligns with the work, but is quite broad and doesn't capture the specific feature being added (issue number tracking for WIP rules).
Description check ✅ Passed The description clearly articulates the purpose of the changes: adding optional issue numbers for WIP rules to provide a feedback hub for users, explains the motivation, and references documentation updates.

crates/biome_analyze/src/rule.rs (1)

47-50: RuleMetadata::issue_number API is consistent; only docs could be tightened

The new metadata field and builder are wired correctly and match how the macros extend RuleMetadata. Only the doc comment is a bit awkwardly phrased; you might consider a small polish:

Optional doc wording tweak
- /// Use this field to tag the rule as being worked, which means the rule is still far from being completed.
- /// Possible bugs should be reported in that issue.
+ /// Use this field to tag the rule as being actively worked on, meaning the rule is not yet complete.
+ /// Possible bugs should be reported in the linked issue.

As per coding guidelines, keeping field docs clear helps rule authors discover and use WIP tagging correctly.

🔇 Additional comments (2)
crates/biome_js_analyze/src/lint/nursery/no_unnecessary_conditions.rs (1)

86-95: WIP issue metadata for NoUnnecessaryConditions looks consistent

Hooking this rule up to issue 6611 via issue_number: Some("6611") is consistent with the new WIP mechanism and its nursery placement, so the extra diagnostic note will behave as intended.

Based on learnings, nursery rules marked as WIP are exactly the right place to experiment.

crates/biome_js_analyze/src/lint/nursery/use_sorted_classes.rs (1)

153-160: UseSortedClasses WIP issue hook is well wired

Adding issue_number: Some("1274") here lines up neatly with the existing docs and warning block that already point to that issue, so users will see a consistent “work in progress” story in both diagnostics and the website.

Based on learnings, this is a good use of the nursery/WIP pattern.

CodSpeed Performance Report

Merging #8511 will not alter performance

Comparing chore/improve-wip-rules (3a22b84) with main (d64e92d)1

Summary

✅ 58 untouched
⏩ 95 skipped2

Footnotes

  1. No successful run was found on main (e30d752) during the generation of this report, so d64e92d was used instead as the comparison base. There might be some changes unrelated to this pull request in this report.

  2. 95 benchmarks were skipped, so the baseline results were used instead. If they were deleted from the codebase, click here and archive them to remove them from the performance reports.

72-80: Remove unused variable declaration.

Line 72 declares issue_number but it's immediately shadowed by the if let pattern on line 74, making it redundant.
