fix for #164
I've submitted this but i'd love a little feedback first, I am still looking at the use of bash for the init-variables script, it could use a little finessing, maybe there's some more maintainable code style i could use.
This approach right now necessitates the use of env vars, it isn't relying on the script paramters,
