Like most of the WAI Website, the Quick Reference is a Jekyll project, with a Gulp component that creates JS & CSS.
- If you have never used Jekyll before: Follow the Jekyll Installation Instructions to install prerequisites
- Run
bundle installin the repo's root folder
Additionally, if you will need to edit CSS or JS:
- If you have never used Node.js before: Install Node.js LTS
- Run
npm iin the repo's root folder
If bundle install encounters an error while installing nokogiri, related to libxml2's config.sub:
- Install
pkg-configand development files for libxml2 and libxslt (e.g.libxml2-devandlibxslt-devon Debian or Ubuntu) - Run
NOKOGIRI_USE_SYSTEM_LIBRARIES=1 bundle install
CSS and JS are built via gulp tasks, which are exposed as npm scripts for convenience.
npm run scsswill rebuildcss/styles.cssandcss/styles.min.cssnpm run jswill run lint and rebuildjs/script.jsnpm run watchwill watch for SCSS and JS changes and rebuild when necessary- This can be run in a separate terminal alongside

Run npm run json.
This requires Node.js v20 or higher, for the built-in fetch global.
The data is saved as wcag21.json in the _data directory. Due to the complexity of the WCAG standard, the JSON file format is also quite complex. The data is exported from the WCAG source code and handed over to this repository.
Note: In the past SC text or techniques have been missing from the export. Unfortunately due to the complex nature and different formatting of the export, it was impossible to spot potential gaps in the new files. Usually the public is quick to inform us about missing data.
After checking out/updating this repository and installing Jekyll dependencies, use the following command to generate a new version of “How to Meet WCAG (Quick Reference)”:
bundle exec jekyll build --config "_config.yml,_config_prod.yml" --profileCopy the contents of the _site folder to the quickref folder in CVS. For example, from within the CVS quickref folder, run the following:
cp -r path/to/_site/* .Commit all files and the new version of the quick reference is online.
