What Are Funnels

Learn more about conversions and drop-offs in Funnels.

Updated over 6 months ago

Funnels in Mouseflow help you understand how visitors move through a series of steps on your website - this could be signing up, checking out, or completing any key flow. Funnels can help you identify where users drop off and where they convert, helping you optimize your user experience and improve conversions.

How Do Funnels Work

When you define a funnel in Mouseflow, it checks all recorded sessions to find users who interacted with the pages (steps) you've selected. It then visualizes how many users:

  • Started the funnel

  • Continued to the next step

  • Dropped off along the way

  • Successfully completed all steps

Funnel Logic: Predefined vs. Any Order

You can choose how Mouseflow tracks conversion paths based on your goal; otherwise, Funnels by default are set to be in a predefined order:

Predefined Order

Users must follow the funnel steps in the exact order you've set (though they can visit other pages between steps).

Example (conversion):
Page 1 → Page X → Page 2 → Page Y → Page 3 → Page 4

Example (drop-off at Page 2):
Page 1 → Page 2 → Page 4 → Page 3 (Step 3 was skipped)

Any Order

Users can complete the funnel steps in any order during their session.

Example (conversion):
Page 4 → Page 2 → Page 1 → Page 3

Example (drop-off at Page 3):
Page 1 → Page 2 → Page 4

Track Funnel Performance Over Time

In addition to seeing drop-offs and conversions across steps, you can also view how your funnel performs over time.

The Conversions Over Time graph appears at the bottom of your funnel report (toggle the section header to display) and shows trends for:

  • Conversion Rate

  • Started Funnel

  • Converted

You can adjust the date range to view short or long-term patterns. Each metric can be turned on or off by clicking its name in the legend. This helps you focus on the data that matters most or compare metrics side by side.
