Group Study Rooms, Thesis Desks & Lockers
Group & individual study rooms
New! Starting Monday October 20th, study rooms will be by reservation only. Reserve a room, pick up the key from the library circulation desk, and be sure to return the key when your reservation is complete.
We offer 4 group study rooms for Reed students, faculty, and staff. You can book a room for up to 2 hours per day. Bookings can last for a duration of 30 minutes to 2 hours (120 minutes total). Only one study room can be booked at a time.
Once your booking has been successfully submitted, you will receive an email confirming your reservation. You can cancel your reservation at any point up until the reserved time via the link in the confirmation email. If you need assistance with booking a room, please contact the circulation desk at 503-777-7702.
There is also an open collaborative work area at the south end of south stacks, available on a first come first served basis.
Thesis desks
Desks assigned to seniors are for their sole use through the end of the school year or as long as they remain registered for 470. Spring/Fall seniors will need to re-enter the thesis lottery in the fall. Desks do not carry over from spring to fall. Only thesis desks are assigned to individuals. All other seating in the library is open to the Reed Community. You may not claim or reserve these desks. Please take your belongings with you when you leave. Items left on open study desks and tables will be removed and can be retrieved from the circulation desk.
Thesis desk lottery
Senior thesis desk lottery numbers will be drawn from the official 470 list. Eligible seniors will get an email to opt-in to the lottery on Thursday, 9/11. If you are a senior not yet registered for 470, and want to be included in the drawing, please come to the circulation desk and have your name added to the lottery list by Monday, 9/15. Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Studio Art, majors are not eligible for thesis desks in the library.
The list of numbers will be posted Tuesday, 9/16 along with a map of thesis desk locations, so that you can have preferences in mind before the actual selection. Check out our thesis desk map to review desk locations. Seat maps will also be posted in thesis desk areas.
Desk selection will begin at noon on Wednesday, 9/17 in the library lobby. You or your proxy must be present when your name is called. Lottery numbers are not transferable.
PLEASE NOTE: Thesis desks are shared – two students to each side of a desk. In order to create the most pleasant sharing arrangement possible, the person with the better number may bring in as a partner another senior on the list. If you do not have a partner, the seat next to you will be assigned as needed. Please make those arrangements ahead of time and let us know when your name is called.
Thesis desk restrictions
The staff, assisted by student monitors, will remove the following from thesis desks:
- Library materials that are not checked out.
- Plants, flowers, etc. Sorry – they attract bugs.
- All dishes and silverware. You can return commons dishes to the container in the lobby.
- All opened packages or containers of food and beverages. Sorry – bugs again.
- All electrical appliances and extension cords (per the fire marshall).
Lockers
Lockers are available for no charge. They are located on LL1 and L2 by the central staircase. Once you know the location you would prefer, ask at the main circulation desk and they will assign you a locker and give you the combination. Lockers must be vacated at the end of the school year.
