Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated inflammatory disease that attacks myelinated axons in the central nervous system. Variable degrees of myelin and axon destruction occur with exacerbations or attacks (and to some degree subclinically between attacks), resulting in potentially significant physical disability in over 30% of patients within 20-25 years. The clinical patterns are variable combinations of progressive and episodic dysfunction. This decline, and MS in general, has been shown to result in a lower health-related quality of life in adults and children. MS symptomatic episodes can be separated by months or years and affect different anatomic locations. Comorbidities exert important effects on patients throughout the course of the disease, from the time of symptom onset and diagnosis through advanced MS management and the end of life.
Are you aware of the ways that comorbidities might affect patients with MS, including diagnosis, disability progression, and treatment options? Test your knowledge with this quick quiz.
