Composers, musicians, and music students in need of a music composition and editing environment with MIDI features

About Rosegarden

Rosegarden is a music composition and editing environment based around a MIDI sequencer that features a rich understanding of music notation and includes basic support for digital audio. Rosegarden is an easy-to-learn, attractive application that runs on Linux, ideal for composers, musicians, music students, and small studio or home recording environments. Rosegarden is currently an application for Linux only. Now that we have ported to Qt 4, and now that Qt is freely available for all platforms without a commercial license, there are fewer obstacles standing in the way of eventually becoming a cross-platform application. Rosegarden uses the Qt 4 libraries for various common controls, but you can run it under any window manager or graphical environment you like. The Open in Notation Editor option on the main view's Segments menu will open all the currently-selected segments together in a single editor.

"I think this is the best composition software that exists nowadays."

    Edited 2025-06-04

Pros: I like everything about it. Right from the beginning that it was available on the internet, since 2001 or 2002. On Red Hat 5.3 - Suse 6,3-7.3-9.3 - Mandrake, Ubuntu and the last years on Linux Mint Una. As of now the LTS of Linux Mint Una has ended. The next distro will be Ubuntu Studio within I will use Rosegarden. Because of KDE Plasma. I used that many years with Suse. I have all the time now that I am 78 years of age.

    Cons: N/A.

Overall: I installed Rosegarden right from the beginning that it was available on the internet, around 2001 or 2002 on different Linux distro's. Alas, I only used it to play all my MIDI-files (15.000). I never used it as it was aimed for, although it was my idea to update all the oldtime MIDI-files.

    "Great Mid Sequencer !!!"

    Posted 2024-12-15

Pros: Is an excellent alternative for use with mid tracks. Audio tracks. A perfect and very stable Digital Audio Workstation!

Cons: You need to insert a sound font player, SF2, SF3...etc.

Overall: I'm a musician and I've been making my arrangements using Rosegarden since 2015. It has good editing and audio mixing features. A good alternative to paid software.
