I have recently bought a second hand rig an Icom IC-736. I see it is untested with hamlib 3.3. I try it and the first thing my homebrew logging app does after connecting is ask the mode. I see hamlib write block: fe fe 40 e0 04 fd, then hamlib read string the same 6 bytes, then read string just one byte fe. It then times out a tad over 1.1 seconds.
