Welcome to All Science Great & Small!

Your source for independent news & analysis in veterinary medicine

Hey there! 👋 I'm Dr. Eric Fish, a veterinarian with over a decade of experience in emergency and specialty medicine, laboratory diagnostics, research, and teaching. You can read my published work here. My interests span veterinary medicine, molecular biology, and technology (especially AI), along with a passion for travel and learning about the world. Here is my conflict of interest disclosure page.

I named this newsletter “All Science Great & Small” as an homage to the famous veterinary series All Creatures Great and Small by Dr. James Herriot. Those books warmed hearts and inspired generations of people to become veterinarians, including myself. My goal with science writing is to focus on animals of all kinds and to make it accessible to everyone, similar to Dr. Herriot. Topics I cover include breaking news in the veterinary industry, big stories in scientific research, technology, and public health.

Why subscribe?

Sometimes people ask me why they should click subscribe when they can see my posts on social media or just bookmark the website. Well, there’s several reasons! First, social media is pretty unreliable these days, as apps like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and others can suppress links to outside pages to keep traffic for themselves, and sometimes they actively censor posts (I found that out recently when writing about violence in the ER). A subscription ensures you always see each post without relying on a middleman from Big Tech. Second, it’s a great show of support for the time and effort I put into researching and writing these articles.

Finally, while most articles are free to all, for those who go above and beyond to take out a paid subscription, the revenue allows me to remain an independent voice. Furthermore, I donate 20% of the proceeds to the local Humane Society of Tampa Bay. So you get a double-win: Supporting independent writing AND helping to feed and adopt homeless dogs and cats!!

Please note that I am happy to offer complimentary upgrades for students, interns, residents, and people with financial hardships. Simply shoot me an email with the details of your situation 👇
