Hello and thank you for being here :)
‘A Museum in the Woods’ brings together my three big passions - art history, nature and the medieval period. I’m fascinated by how our relationship with the natural world is shaped by our culture, and how we use culture to make sense of our place within nature.
I did my BA in Art History at the University of Oxford and my MA in Medieval Studies at the University of York. In both degrees I specialised in the natural imagery found within sacred spaces in medieval England. I believe that understanding how cultures in the past have interpreted and connected to the natural world brings us a deeper awareness of our place within ecology. I also think any form of creativity that engages with nature is a powerful way of shaping our own relationship with nonhuman life … and sometimes weird images of medieval animals are just fun and joyful to look at.
I left Instagram feeling disillusioned and grumpy with it in 2024 and I am delighted to have replaced it with this wonderful community on Substack. I love having a feed full of nature writers and art historians, mythologists and painters. If you like anything I’ve written, please share, as it really helps - I would love to get more of us thinking about art, nature and our place in the world. Book recommendations are also welcome!
All writing is my own and I never use AI
