Annotations
Available since v3.4
Annotations let you pin a note to a date on a website's traffic chart. Use them to record things that explain a change in the numbers, like a deploy, a campaign launch, an outage, or a mention in the press. Next time you or a teammate opens the chart, the note is sitting right on the day it happened.
In the dashboard, the button is labeled Notes.
Adding an Annotation#
Open a website and on the Overview page, find the website chart. Below it, on the right, click Notes.
In the dialog, click Add note, then:
- Pick the date the note applies to.
- Type the note text. You get up to 500 characters.
- Click Save.
You need edit access to the website to add, edit, or delete annotations. On shared and public dashboards they show up but can't be changed.
Chart Markers#
Every annotation shows up as a marker on the chart, lined up with the point where its date falls. If more than one annotation lands on the same point, they combine into a single marker with a count on it.
Tooltip#
Hover over a marker to see what's on it: the date and text for up to three notes. If a marker groups more than three, a View button opens the full list for that point.
Drilling In#
Click a marker to pull the whole dashboard onto that annotation's date. Every metric and panel updates to cover just that stretch of time. On a monthly chart a grouped marker takes you to the month, and on a daily chart it takes you to the day.
You can drill in when the chart covers more than one day and isn't already in hourly view.
Managing Annotations#
The Notes dialog lists your annotations in a table.
- Use the toggle to switch between Current Date range and All Notes.
- Click the date in a row to drill into that annotation's date.
- Use the row actions to edit or delete an annotation. This needs edit access.
