Can’t stop, won’t stop.

If we haven’t met yet: Hello! I’m Ellen, and I’m forever ignoring good advice like the good-humored note from a beloved friend, above.

Really, though, welcome. If you have a strong distaste for small talk, a penchant for over-sharing, and tend toward the more sensitive side of life, you’re in the right place.

I’ve always found expressing myself in writing more comfortable and effective than trying to say what I think/feel/want/need, so have been a writer for as long as I’ve known how to form letters. Professionally, I’ve been a writer and editor for more than 15 years.

I quickly learned there were two areas of writing that felt most fulfilling to me: personal essays and wonky deep-dive features (see note above, again; that particular gem was given to me when I was several thousand words over the allotted word count for a feature on [wait for it…] PEAT! By far one of my weirdest, most beloved subjects for a feature thus far in my life.).

Anyway. That’s what The Deep End is all about: exploring those areas of life that we either don’t like to talk about or don’t think about talking about. Mostly personal essays, but also a smattering of observations, the occasional round-up of favorite odd-ball articles, and whatever else is floating across my conscience. Thanks for being here and exploring the deep end of life with me.

Why subscribe?

It’s completely optional to subscribe. I include the option with the hopes that, one day, I’ll get to write stuff like this full-time, as my own boss, and to do so, I’ll need a way to fuel my existence. So hey, if you’d like to start helping me along that path: THANK YOU! If you’re just here to enjoy some words from me from time to time, THANK YOU! I appreciate you all.
