The Quick Route

Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) is the closest international airport, just 45km away. Take the A8 north toward Loures, then the A21 west directly to Ericeira. In light traffic, you're door-to-door in 35 minutes.

Rush hour (8-10am, 5-8pm on weekdays) can push it to 50 minutes. On weekends and outside peak hours, 35 minutes is reliable.

Fastest

Taxi / Uber / Bolt

The easiest option. Uber and Bolt both operate from Lisbon airport. Expect €35-50 depending on traffic and time of day. The ride is straightforward - highway the entire way.

Most Flexible

Rental Car

All major rental companies are at LIS. A car is useful if you want to explore the coast - Sintra, Mafra Palace, and other surf spots are all within 30 minutes. Parking in Ericeira is generally easy outside of August.

Cheapest

Bus

Take the metro to Campo Grande, then the Carris Metropolitana bus (route 2801) to Ericeira. Runs roughly every hour, takes about 90 minutes total including the metro ride. Single ticket around €4-7. Cash only on the bus - you can't pay by card. If you're commuting regularly, the €40/month Navegante pass covers the bus to Ericeira plus all buses, trams, and metro in Lisbon - a game-changer for regular commuters.

From Further Afield

3 hours

From Porto

Drive south on the A1 to Lisbon, then A8/A21 to Ericeira. About 310km, roughly 3 hours. Alternatively, fly Porto to Lisbon (45min) and drive from LIS.

30 minutes

From Sintra

Take the N247 coastal road north - one of the most scenic drives in Portugal. Passes through Praia das Maçãs, Azenhas do Mar, and along dramatic cliff-top roads.

10 minutes

From Mafra

The nearest town with a major landmark - the colossal Mafra National Palace. A quick 10-minute drive or bus ride. Many Ericeira residents do their big grocery shops in Mafra.

03 - Getting Around

Once You're Here

Ericeira town center is entirely walkable - everything from the harbor to the main square to the cliff-top bars is within a 15-minute walk. For reaching the surf breaks spread along the coast (Coxos, Ribeira d'Ilhas, Foz do Lizandro), you'll want a car, bicycle, or a ride from one of the local surf shuttles.

Electric scooter and bicycle rentals have popped up around town. Uber and Bolt both work in Ericeira - surprisingly well for a small town. Bolt tends to have more drivers in the area. Many surf camps and accommodations offer shuttles to the main breaks.

No train connection: Unlike Cascais or Oeiras, Ericeira doesn't have a train line. The bus is your only public transit option for the Lisbon commute. E-bikes are catching on fast, especially with the expat community, but the steep hills mean a regular bicycle is a serious workout.

Toll costs: If you're driving to Lisbon regularly, expect to pay about €3.10 each way in tolls (A21: €2.15 + A8: €0.95). That adds up to ~€125/month if you commute daily - factor it in when budgeting.
