Well Ryedale in North Yorkshire is where I'm from and I was just back there this weekend... my feeling was that the demographics are doing funny things. There's quite a lot of WEALTH about the place but a lot of it is held by the retired. It wasn't clear to me that some of the old white collar professional jobs that enabled those people to build up the wealth earn as much, or are available to, the next generation.

Interesting! What kind of jobs are you thinking have declined? Managers, lawyers that kind of thing?

York professional class used to live in farm cottages surrounding North Yorkshire villages, now they want to live in York itself. Just look at relative house prices in the two areas. And at the same time a slug of newly arrived York professionals are WFH from London-based jobs. Pushing lower earning people who grew up in York out to Selby etc due to lack of housing.

Not sure how that shows up in stats.

Malton is an interesting exception where you see young families as they are actually building houses through a single major landowner.

My entirely anecdotal vibe is that the small town solicitor or accountant isn’t as good a living as it used to be or employing as many staff.

Very aware N Yorks is massive and I only know the eastern half very well, not Harrogate and the dales.
