This version is buggy. Treat this as a code to be potentially reused to solve #1812, after all problems in this code have been solved.
Some changes have fell off during the recovery process, mainly parts in core.cpp that update the counters. Note that the PR is still visible and changes can be found there, but the branch is already deleted.
