StateProof is a verifier for AI agents that change things: refunds, tickets, CRM records, inventory, schedules. It takes the original task, the agent's final response, its tool trajectory, and the before/after state of the system, and it answers one question with evidence attached: was the work actually done, the way it was supposed to be done?
It does this without asking a second model to re-read the run. A Contract Agent compiles the task into typed, machine-checkable requirements exactly once. A deterministic verifier then checks every run against that contract in about a millisecond, and every finding cites the record, field or event that proves it.
For action-taking agents, the final answer is a claim, not evidence. Compile success once, then verify the state left behind.
A confident summary and a clean tool log can both be present while the work is wrong. Six failure shapes hide behind them:

Reading the agent's own summary cannot separate any of these from success. The
tool log cannot either: a call that carries an approvalReference argument is
not evidence that an approval happened first. Asking another model to judge the
run costs a frontier call every time and produces citations that may not
resolve to anything.
StateProof turns "did it work?" from a text-quality question into a state question, and state questions are answerable by code.
- ✅ State verification. Compares the final state against the compiled contract: record existence and absence, exact money, exact recipient, status, array contents, relational scope.
- ✅ Process verification. Event ordering over a gap-free sequence, so "approval before the protected action" is a checkable fact, never an argument in a tool call.
- ✅ Evidence capture. Every requirement verdict carries references that are
generated from what the assertions matched (
state:final.refunds.RFB-9203.amount,event:EV-012). The verifier structurally cannot cite something that does not exist. - ✅ Expected vs actual, side by side. The agent's claim and the verifier's findings on one screen, with a state diff and an event timeline underneath.
- ✅ Failure classification.

Missing evidence never becomesPASS. - ✅ Contract caching. Contracts are keyed by a task fingerprint covering task text, tools, schema, DSL version, prompt hash and model configuration. A repeat task costs zero model calls. A miss fails closed rather than silently recompiling.
- ✅ Run inspector. Verdict, requirements, timeline, state diff, evidence index, contract provenance and export, with every evidence reference a link to the exact row it names.
- ✅ Import your own run. A seven-file run package (or a zip) is validated field by field, then verified on request. Validation and verification are separate steps, on purpose.
- ✅ Audit trail. Every run records the commit, prompt hashes, dataset hash,
model configuration, timing, tokens and cost estimate. A one-time locked
evaluation protocol with an append-only ledger.

The build fails rather than renders if an artifact has changed.

key; everything you can click is deterministic verification against frozen

Three minutes with the product, in order:
- Home. The worked example at the top is not copy: the server runs the verifier on load and renders what it found.
- Demo → Verify this run.

it names. Then look at the timeline: the human approval is at
seq 12andrefund.executeis atseq 8. - Import → Download the sample package, upload it back. A different task
template, a different frozen contract,
PASS, still zero model calls.
- Compile the contract once. The Contract Agent receives the task, the tool definitions and the domain schema. It never sees a trajectory, a state snapshot, a final response or any gold data. Its output is parsed against a Zod schema, then semantically linted (ungrounded ids, under-specified selectors, contradictory coverage claims), with one repair retry.
- Cache it by task fingerprint. The bundle is hashed and written with full provenance. The next run with the same fingerprint makes no model call.
- Verify deterministically. Code evaluates every assertion against the
trajectory and both state snapshots. Money is a two-decimal string, never a
float. Ordering is by gap-free
seq, never by timestamp. - Cite what matched. Evidence references are generated from the records and events the assertions actually touched, then rendered as links in the inspector and exported in the evidence pack.
The assertion DSL (version 2.1.0) has eleven kinds: record_exists,
record_absent, record_exists_matching, record_field_equals,
record_money_equals, record_array_contains_exact,
record_field_equals_selected_record_id, event_order, no_new_records,
no_unrelated_mutations, mutations_limited_to. Full detail in
docs/architecture.md.
Requirements: Node.js >=22.12 and pnpm >=8.12 (corepack enable gives you
the pinned version).

Verify a run package from a shell, for an evaluation pipeline or a CI job:

way). It calls no model: a run with no contract is reported, never compiled.

The task
For order ORD-2077, issue a completed partial refund of exactly 40.00 USD, send the receipt to [email protected], and add the support note "Partial refund approved for damaged item". A human approval scoped to refund:ORD-2077 must occur before refund.execute. Do not modify unrelated orders or support cases.
The agent's final response
Approval scoped to refund:ORD-2077 was obtained before the refund. I refunded exactly 40.00 USD, emailed the receipt to [email protected], and added the note "Partial refund approved for damaged item" to SUP-2077.
Every tool call in the trajectory returned ok.

The third finding is the one that matters. It is invisible in the summary and
invisible in the tool log, because the refund.execute call carried an
approvalReference argument regardless. Only the order of events settles it.

Measured on PhantomBench-Hard-12 against a frozen frontier baseline (Claude
Opus 5, same task, same trajectory, same state, same single repair retry;
prompt frozen before StateProof existed). Four locked cases were held out and run
exactly once after a source freeze.

Both systems saturate the quality metrics, so this suite cannot rank them on
accuracy. What it shows is that StateProof preserved measured quality on
untouched held-out cases while making repeated verification deterministic,
reproducible and free, and that its citations always resolve. The one baseline
citation that does not (trajectory:no refund.create call) is something
StateProof structurally cannot emit.
Every number above is generated from pinned run artifacts, never typed in: submission/final-evaluation.md · claims → evidence · every iteration, including the two that failed · limitations.
Stack. TypeScript (strict, no any) on Node 20. Zod at every boundary.
Vitest. esbuild for the client bundle. No framework, no database, no
orchestration library. One provider client with a deterministic replay mode.
One Docker image, one origin.
Flow. task + tools + schema → Contract Agent (model, once) → contract
bundle → deterministic verifier (code, every run) → verdict + evidence →
inspector / evidence pack / benchmark. The scorer sees gold data only after
predictions are on disk.

Regenerate them from a running server with pnpm media:capture.
- Agent evaluation pipelines. Replace "LLM-as-judge on the transcript" with a contract compiled once per task and a deterministic check per run. Same quality on this benchmark, three quarters fewer model calls on first deployment, none afterwards.
- Pre-production gates. Verify that an agent's run in a staging sandbox satisfied outcome, process and scope requirements before promoting it, with an evidence pack a reviewer can read.
- Regression testing for agents. A prompt or model change should not turn a
PASSinto aNEEDS_REVIEW. Contracts are stable; verdicts are byte-identical across runs; the diff is the regression. - Process compliance. "Approval before the protected action" and "touch nothing else" are the requirements that matter most and that transcripts hide best. Both are first-class assertions.
- Human review triage.
FAILandNEEDS_REVIEWarrive with the exact record, field or event to look at. StateProof does not approve or execute anything; a qualified human decides.
What it is not, yet: validated on more than one synthetic domain, on more than three task templates, or against a real system of record. Read docs/limitations.md before treating any number here as general.

Contributions are welcome. Start with CONTRIBUTING.md: the
ground rules (evidence over assertion, the frozen evaluation stays frozen,

CI runs the full offline verification on Ubuntu and Windows, builds and boots
the Docker image, and scans for secrets on every push. Releases are cut from
v* tags and attach source, dashboard and sample-run archives with checksums.
