The Kafka protocol has been updated a few times since this repo was last updated, these changes may help support Kafka 2.3 (and later?)

I would've loved to manually import some git history, but I'm lazy and just did a cp from the upstream dpkp/kafka-python

In the interest of speed I think it's fine as long as we manage to do a proper upstream release later.

Can we add maybe the original commit message and author in the commit?
