Fix build issues related to Solaris and older GCC

slight binary-incompatibility with 0.7.0

That change was actually introduced a few weeks back. If you
require binary-compatibility, see pre-C++11 branch and 0.7.0 tag.

Moving forward, we plan to support only C++11, but old compilers
should still work at this point.
