IIRC on is supposed to replace the free methods. I also don't see any mention of that in the release notes. The release announcement states:

.load, .unload, and .error, deprecated since jQuery 1.8, are no more. Use .on() to register listeners.

Where did you read of this deprecation?

There is also $(document).on( "ready", handler ), deprecated as of jQuery 1.8 and removed in jQuery 3.0.
