Is there somewhere these can be double checked against? Had a quick look on the freetype website but didn't have much luck

I've downloaded from http://download.savannah.gnu.org/releases/freetype/ and from a mirror and validated the given hashes.

Of, course this is no guarantee, but as good as we can get if these hashes are not published anywhere.

Yes, unfortunately, I don't think there are any sums posted. You can download the GPG signatures and verify them (though I don't know how to verify the WoT to the person that signed it.) Previously, you could also compare against sums in Fedora, but they've switched to .xz tarballs.
