Certainly part of the PEP. Do you know if it was ever backported to 2.6 & 2.7? Does numpy support the mapping?

In any case, needs some tests.

I can't see a use for this. There is an (obsolete) 'c' dtype which produces arrays of |S1, but the memoryview of the resulting buffer has type '1s'. Numpy strings themselves are latin1. So without support the 'c' seems to serve no purpose.
