You need to make aws account with a credit card and then you get 200$ in credits on aws to use on selected products there you can pick bedrock and host Claude code there |

@martinwoodward Please reconsider this change. Many students relied specifically on models like Sonnet and Opus for studying, research, and solving complex programming problems. These models were the reason Copilot was so helpful for us. Without them, Copilot becomes far less useful for academic work. Most students cannot afford paid plans, so this change does not push us to upgrade it only pushes us away from using Copilot. We respectfully ask you to restore at least limited access to these models for students. |

@ghaif You have to understand there are verified educators here who are saying this. the fre eplan runs out the moment you graduate so I think its justified, plus there are so many more solutions like more rate limiting or day wise limiting or making the requests 10x instead of 1 x or 3x but gatekeeping the models, that just shows no cinsideration. We have to also remember that Microsoft & Github ensure that these same students who eventually join / start ocmpanies will take the familiarity of these tools with them. |

it's not being greedy, it's about betraying us with no notice. Look at the recent changes made to Scratch. They changed their ToS to something very anti-user friendly and terrible. Scratch is completely free though, so we shouldn't be mad about something that's free, right? Is that what you're saying? Your family didn't have to raise you. They didn't have to feed you or care for you. So if your family stopped helping you ever at all without any notice, would you be sad? |

The intention to keep Copilot free and sustainable for millions of students is clearly valuable. That said, I’d like to share feedback that reflects not only my own experience, but also what many students in this discussion seem to be feeling. For us, Copilot for students isn’t a product we actively chose to purchase — it’s part of the student program intended to support learning. Because of that, the recent changes feel quite impactful:
Together, these changes make it much harder to rely on Copilot consistently for learning, experimenting, and building real projects. From reading through the discussion, there seems to be a common pattern in feedback:
I completely understand the need to control costs, ensure sustainability, and prevent abuse. However, the current balance feels quite restrictive for students who are genuinely trying to learn and use these tools responsibly. Even a modest adjustment — such as tighter limits but retaining some level of access to higher-capability models — would likely help balance both goals: sustainability and educational usefulness. I’m sharing this in the hope that this broader student perspective can be considered in future updates. Thank you for your time. |

GPT 5.2 or 5.3-codex is a monster. Everyone used it as the top model up until few months ago. Saying that removing the latest models that just got released a month ago "significantly reduced the practical usefulness of Copilot" is just bs. You are very spoiled and entitled. GPT 5.2/5.3 are more than enough for a "student". |

We don't measure productivity by what was "top" in the past; we measure it by the current SOTA (State of the Art) that solves complex reasoning tasks. If you're still mesmerized by legacy models, it only suggests your workflow hasn't evolved to a point where the logic-drift and high hallucination rates of older models become a bottleneck.
Response: It’s only "BS" if your coding tasks are trivial. For power users managing complex WSL2 environments, Docker orchestration, or specialized research like Human Motion Recognition, the gap in context-window management and architectural reasoning is night and day. Removing the most capable tools objectively degrades the experience. If you don't perceive the loss in utility, you're simply not hitting the model's ceiling—some of us are.
Response: Calling users "spoiled" because the student version is free is a weak attempt to deflect from service quality. The GitHub Global Campus program isn't an act of charity; it’s a strategic investment to keep the next generation of developers in the GitHub ecosystem. Providing "free" access to downgraded, legacy technology defeats the purpose of an educational grant. If the goal is to empower students to build the future, giving them second-rate tools is a bad investment, not a gift we should blindly praise.
Response: This "enough for a student" rhetoric is incredibly patronizing and outdated. As a Master’s candidate in Data Science and AI, my research involves high-stakes neural network optimization and complex multi-modal pipelines that require the highest level of reasoning available. "Enough" for your basic Python scripts is a far cry from what is required for actual AI research. Don't project your low-ceiling requirements onto those of us who utilize top-tier hardware (like an RTX 5070 Ti) and require matching AI logic to move the needle in the academic field. Final ThoughtFree or not, a tool's value is measured by its performance. If your workflow is so simple that a legacy model is "more than enough," you're not the target audience for cutting-edge AI. Some of us are here to push the boundaries of research, not just to finish homework. |

I’m still really enjoying the GitHub Student benefits, even without access
to premium models. I still get a lot of value from the other tools included
in the offer, especially GitHub Codespaces. Having access to a free cloud
IDE with [4] CPU cores and [16] GB of RAM is a huge help for someone like
me, since my personal laptop is only [8] GB RAM and sometimes struggles
with heavier workloads.
I often use Codespaces not just for coding, but also for training projects,
running local models through Ollama, and experimenting with tools like
OpenClaw, even if the responses can be a bit slow at times. I also use it
when building mobile apps, and it has honestly been a lifesaver for my
workflow.
I really hope GitHub continues to keep Codespaces as part of the student
offer, because for many students with limited hardware, it makes a big
difference.

Copilot is evolving quickly, with new capabilities, models, and experiences shipping fast. As Copilot evolves and the student community continues to grow, we need to make some adjustments to ensure we can provide sustainable, long-term GitHub Copilot access to students worldwide.
Our commitment to providing free access to GitHub Copilot for verified students is not changing. What is changing is how Copilot is packaged and managed for students.
What this means for you
Starting today, March 12, 2026, your complimentary Copilot access will be managed under a new GitHub Copilot Student plan, alongside your existing GitHub Education benefits. Your academic verification status will not change, and there is nothing you need to do to continue using Copilot. You will see that you are on the GitHub Copilot Student plan in the UI, and your existing premium request unit (PRU) entitlements will remain unchanged.
As part of this transition, however, some premium models, including GPT-5.4, and Claude Opus and Sonnet models, will no longer be available for self-selection under the GitHub Copilot Student Plan. We know this will be disappointing, but we’re making this change so we can keep Copilot free and accessible for millions of students around the world.
That said, through Auto mode, you'll continue to have access to a powerful set of models from providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. We'll keep adding new models and expanding the intelligence in Auto mode that helps match the right model to your task and workflow. We support a global community of students across thousands of universities and dozens of time zones, so we’re being intentional about how we roll out changes. Over the coming weeks, we will be making additional adjustments to available models or usage limits on certain features — the specifics of which we'll be testing with your feedback.

Your experience matters to us, and your feedback will directly shape how this plan evolves. Leave a comment below, what's working for you, what gets in the way, and what you need most.
