Hello, I’m Jenna, and I’m an Apocaloptimist.
Urban Dictonary defines an apocaloptimist as: “Someone who knows it’s all going to shit, but still thinks things will turn out okay.” This is a good place to start understanding the general concept, but I don’t think things are going to be okay, I know things are going to be okay. And I know that things will likely be shit again at some point. I also know that when I stay in it and attend to the work of it - whatever it is at the moment - things change and I can grow and adapt and change along with it.
How do I know? Well, I don’t really. None of us knows what’s going on in the grand scheme of things - if there is a grand scheme of things. (Spoiler alert: I think there is.)
Jenna Baer is invested in exploring how to live as creatively and sensorially as possible, and is inclined towards diverse forms of communication, connection & collaboration with humans & non-humans. She is a writer, artist, and general creative whose working roles include death doula, reflexologist, celebrant/officiant, teacher, and something like a seer. Lately, she spends most of her time walking, listening, feeling, writing, designing, building, connecting, imagining, and either dancing while cooking and then sitting to chew food slowly or chopping furiously and then standing over the pan to eat with her fingers and glare into the ether. She likes campfires, every single flower that has ever bloomed, a rumbling growl, and will usually pick savory over sweet. Central Ohio, USA, is where she’s been based, but beginning in autumn of 2023 she’s moving to Scotland to attend the University of Edinburgh, pursuing a Master’s degree in Narrative Futures: Art, Data, and Society through the Edinburgh Futures Institute.
