Hi, I’m Jen!
I’m the author of queer books for kids, like QUEENS OF GEEK and THIS IS THE WAY THE WORLD ENDS. My latest, PAIGE NOT FOUND, just hit shelves in April.
I’m bisexual, nonbinary (she/they), autistic, chronically ill, and chronically online. I was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, but now I live in Brooklyn, NY, with my hot wife and our two rescue cats, Harry and Gemma.
I’ve been writing online since 2010 and started writing books in 2015. Some cool stuff has happened, like when my books were praised by Teen Vogue, Autostraddle, Buzzfeed, Bustle and Vulture. My debut, QUEENS OF GEEK, made 2018 Rainbow Book List and the Amelia Bloomer List. In 2022, my pilot about an autistic woman coming out as queer won the Comedy category in the International Screenwriters Association Fast Track competition.
My debut Middle Grade novel, PAIGE NOT FOUND, was a Junior Library Guilde Gold Standard Selection, and named one of the Best Books of 2024 by BookRiot.
About Stacks & Spoons
Stacks and Spoons is where I write on the Internet about the Internet, pop culture, queerness, disability, and most of all: BOOKS. More specifically: queer books. I share lists of new books, favourite books, even Books to Read if You Loved the Barbie Movie.
I also share personal stories about being a late-in-life bisexual, divorce, heartbreak, finding love in the pandemic, and many other plot twists in my life.
Here are some of my popular recent posts:
WOMEN DON'T OWE YOU SHIT.
What this comes down to is consent. How many times do we have to see a female pop star harassed to the point of breakdown before we understand this? It’s all ‘no is a full sentence’ until our fave doesn’t want their photo taken and suddenly they are ungrateful divas who don’t deserve their success.
You Don't Need To Come Out To Be Queer
Queer activists and straight allies are always calling for the freedom to live life on our own terms – that includes people who don’t want a coming out moment.
Barbie, Taylor, Beyoncé, and the Era of Joy
“The sharing of joy, whether physical, emotional, psychic, or intellectual, forms a bridge between the sharers which can be the basis for understanding much of what is not shared between them, and lessens the threat of their difference.”
But what does ‘Stacks and Spoons’ mean, tho?
Stacks = stacks of books. because I like to read and write and buy too many books.
Spoons = based on spoon theory. because I’m disabled and often share a lot about being autistic and chronically ill.
