Except we shouldn't let them go extinct. Pandas are what conservationist call "umbrella species", basically they are the cute good looking face of a huge project to preserve other lesser known species or even the affected environment itself.
Let's be honest, people don't give a shit about the mountain forests of the region of Xstan or about Y bird/fern that is at the verge of extinction and may be valuable for numerous reasons (they are relics of other eras, have an important function or their biochemistry can give new ways to treat diseases in the future). But since they happen to live where pandas live they can just use their image to fund a greater good, not simply saving a "retarded specie".

Also, their main problem is not their "stupidity" rather than their high grade of specialization. They follow the rule of "quantity over quality" pretty much like whales. They even developed a fake finger to eat bamboo. The reason why they might be that lazy is because, you know, you need a lot of time and energy to digest plant matter. Had we caught them some million years later, they wouldn't have that much problems since their digestive track would have evolved to maximize the benefits of said diet.
Have in mind that normally bears have a low birth rate (in brown bears, young females usually fail to raise the first 2 litters thus they start to bring descendants at the age of 5) and if said specie of bear has very low populations the problem gets worse.
