Great update: MedMastodon is back online and its users should be able to access their data.

fediverse@lemmy.world icon Fediverse

Okay folks - The instance is now back up and running I'm pleased to share. Things might take a moment to catch-up and I have sent out an announcement so hopefully anyone that had accounts that doesn't see this will get the e-mail ping letting them know everything is currently back online.I will post a bit more about the plan in the near future but the long story short is nothing is planned to change that folks will see, the main goal for me is to get the site up and running, catch up on the activities that look to be outstanding and get a plan together for migrating everything onto new infrastructure.

Also a huge shoutout to @mastohost who have been excellent at keeping the server "Paused" effectively without deleting data even when there was no confirmed migration path and a real big thanks to Nick for being willing to transfer the server and keep the community running!

Unfortunately, the popular MedMastodon server, dedicated to doctors and medicine, unexpectedly shut down at the end of 2025.

fediverse@lemmy.world icon Fediverse

The speed with which it happened prevented users from accessing their data, highlighting the risks of decentralized social media without backups. Its administrator ceased operations, causing confusion and data loss for many healthcare professionals who had signed up as an alternative to Twitter.

This event serves as a reminder: Wherever you are on Mastodon, back up your data!

WARNING: To help Med-mastodon users who have returned to the Fediverse, the Poliverso staff has created the Friendica group @medmastodon

If you follow this group, you can:

  1. Follow it and mention it in your messages, and it will reshare all your public posts addressed to it (this only applies to an initial message, not a reply to another message).
  2. Follow it only to read all the messages from fellow doctors who send messages through it.

Is the Pantone color system an example of a copyrightable color palette, in terms of meeting the threshold of originality?

Hmm, what's the etiquette for posting or other federated posts on some of the other reddit-analogues? From what I see you can just mention a or group in a post and it will create a post in that group.
But is that actually something the users of those platforms want?

I have not used web interface for a while but I vaguely recall I can directly post a copied image into the mastodon text box; but now I can't.

Has anything changed?

[How to put emojis in your Gitlab username]

Emojis are cool, but most sites like GitLab don't allow you to put emojis in your display name! But I found a way to get around that!

  • Delete your Gitlab account (or not if you want to create a new one)
  • Create a GitHub account (or edit yours) with an username that doesn't exist on Gitlab yet. If you deleted your account, you need to wait for 7 days so you can do that, otherwise the next steps will fail.
  • Set the display name on the GitHub account to anything, including emojis.
  • Create a new account on Gitlab by connecting your GitHub account. Your name will include the emojis!

Check it for yourself at https://gitlab.com/helloyanis

Is that a lot to do just for emojis? Yes! Did I do it anyways? :dragn_mlem: You bet!

Looking for songs that radiate twink energy to get in the zone for my next DnD. Would prefer a vibe that gives the impression that the singer has never once left the Onceler BMI. Any recommendations?

Look, I get into character by listening to songs that I think my character would relate to. Thats what works for me; this 🏳️‍🌈 character is just waaay outside of my normal range.

I wish I had ( ) , I mean like -fe . That would allow me to sort my subscription feed & browse sorted feed, to see ONLY relevant posts (on topic updates follow-up's?).
Well, the mastodon feature of "LISTS" tries something similiar by allowing to make a sorted list of people\subscription, sorted by your custom category/topic. But it doesn't include . Each must be browsed separately, individually, manually, and there is no feature of list of tags in mastodon.
Lemmy, mbin, kbin, piefed and other like implementations allow you to have topics-threads, but each thread does not replicate very well across multiple servers/instances. Can't be easely crossposted ( by pinging multiple category-bots). And doesn't replicate & easily-searchable as classic mastodon .

Other things I don't like:

  • twitter like reposts. they make you feel you subscribed not to the original "reposter" friend, but to "reposted content" that you never subscribed for. the p2p architecture of () kinda eliminates that, they don't have nor show reposts. you see there only original posts, original content, of friends you follow. Kinda helps to slow down the mind from informational overflow. You can opt out to see posts of friend's friends, if you want more. Tags are also supported there.
  • threads consist only of information aggretator url sharing in reddit like clones. Without having OP OC like in bbs|AgoraRoad , they just silo you to clickbait to other web sites.

If GPT (decoder-only transformer) models are text predictors, then why keyboard apps on PCs/phones don't have GPTs as text predictor options? They can be more accurate than the widely used N-gram models.

I’ve been running my for six months now. And as I’m moving more services to it, I need to make sure I also can restore my Docker containers if the server should crash.

Is getting a SFF box like one of the ThinkCentre M7xx/M9xx and restore there a good way to do that exercise?

Updates for my media downloader extension!

Hi all! I'm the developer of my FOSS extension for Firefox : Media Downloader Unleashed!! It's been a while since I shared my progress about the developpment here but better late than never! :blobcat:

  • You can still download m3u8 and mpd streams as offline video files!
  • There is now an option to hide stream segments in the media list. In case you want to download the segments manually
  • Multiple updates to make the extension and its downloads faster : By listening to what the server responds when requesting media and saving it, the extension does not need to replay the network request. If you play half a video on a website and start a download, it will only need to download the other half!
  • There is support for multiple languages! Right now french and english are fully translated and german and portuguese are parially translated.

Try it at https://addons.mozilla.org/addon/media-downloader-unleashed/?utm_source=fedi-share if you haven't yet!

With Netflix buying Warner Bros. Discovery does this mean Neflix could end up being the streaming home of both WWE and AEW? If so that might be a service worth getting.
