Welcome to Eye on I by Mark White

“Eye on I” sets out to tell the deeper, personal stories behind my photography. And in doing so, I hope to better understand my own story.

Since becoming serious with street photography in my hometown of Seattle in 2018, I’ve found the search for “truth” and “authenticity” with my camera to be elusive. Instead what I’ve found in my camera and in my catalogs has been an ongoing record of me, the “I” behind the “Eye,” an ever-growing catalog of my ongoing and evolving obsessions and concerns.

In the early weeks of 2024, I’m focusing my newsletters on my neighborhood — Seattle’s Pioneer Square. It’s a neighborhood that’s seen better days, Seattle’s oldest. I love the multi dimensions its challenges bring. I’ve been walking its streets for years now. It’s time to dive deeper. My hope in this brief project is to uncover the universal in the particulars of my community, and in doing so, continue to explore the “I” behind my “eye.”
