    i hope it finally fixes the bug that makes steam have alzheimers when it comes to windows size and position.

    because I’m sick to fucking death of having to constantly resize and reposition the windows every time i switch between small/large and when launching.

    Its so bad that I gave up and just started browsing steam store via browser.

      I hate that it steals the focus like 5 times when launching. I’ll try to click off to do something while it’s starting, but it steals input focus. I get doing it once when the app finishes loading, but I really don’t need to stare at the startup progress bar.

        Steam, as a program, has fundamentally gotten worse with every update ever since they switched to electron/chromium

        remember for a while they tried to take small mode away from us.

        cause they are going down the same route that everything goes. Its gotten popular, so now they are trying to turn it into a social media platform.

        I dont want a social media playform. theres already enough of those. I just want a small, slick, low resource, easy to use, quick to load program to buy my games and launch them.

      Why would they do that when the community already does? - nothing valve is doing isnt already in Fedora/ublue or Arch, people who say they are going to switch when Valve puts out a general SteamOS image are just wasting time and procrastinating

        OEM interoperability/functionality guarantee

        The last big game dev holdouts will agree to target Linux if the PC userbase jumps significantly and Valve guarantees a standard expectation with technology with things like rolling kernel, latest libs, steam functionality, etc.

        There’s still a lot of stupidly annoying things that are missing like proper wayland (valve->frog) and its resultant features like HDR, VRR, etc.

        The linux packaging problem from 20 years ago is still a problem (albeit much less) which Torvalds himself mentioned Valve would just say “screw it” and bypass/solve the problem via Steam (which they did). The issue is the remainder. Kernel updates are all over the place depending on distro. Everything Ubuntu is technically out of date because SteamOS uses Arch. Fedora gets you closer at least.

        It’s really just that OEM guarantee that would get it moving quicker. Although it might not even happen tbh, Valve said they weren’t that interested in competing against Microsoft which makes sense because its still the primary OS of their customer base.

          A general image for SteamOS is not going to solve this. If you buy a PC from Dell and install SteamOS on it, there is no difference than if you installed Fedora. Secondly Valve is building from the the same sources as every other distro, if SteamOS supports it, every other distro does. In the cases of things like gamemode and gamescope, you can install these or they come with Bazzite and friends too, because Valve already devs these in the open with community and groups like Collabora.

          Gamescope is open so any distro can use it. Desktop compositors are shipping these features already (SteamOS already uses upstream KDE). Not sure what the problem is

          SteamOS uses flatpak, every other distro uses flatpak. Ostree atomic distros (Fedora Silverblue/Kinoite. ublue (bazzite and friends) use flatpak. Modern kernels are on every distro, especially Fedora and Arch. Non-existant problem IMHO

        I’m not waiting to switch. Well other than waiting for the next time I refresh my hardware. I try to only switch my OS when i do new hardware. I mentioned it because I like their style and ways of doing things and I’d enjoy having them in a broader OS sense.

        Exactly. Pick a solid distro, install graphics drivers if you have an nvidia card, then install Steam, and you have a solid gaming distro. SteamOS makes sense for a console-like experience, but a distro doesn’t.

        If you want a “gaming distro,” look up Bazzite or Nobara, they basically do that. But it’s really not necessary, any solid distro is equally capable of being a gaming distro.

        resolution changes lead to gui breaking and inaccurate mouse movements unless in windowed mode

        Audio breaks forcing people to create a special config file for Pipewire

        Gamescope does not work in comp (developed by valve) and has given vac bans for even using it

        The FPS is lower than windows and has micro stutters when compared with windows (Nvidia reflex?)

          • borderless window mode it is. you might be wanting to run exclusive fullscreen but that’s only an advantage on windows and their terrible compositor
          • i’m just on pipewire natively and things are ok. i only noticed that sound can get flaky when you’re coasting too close to 100% cpu
          • yeah gamescope might not work, though it doesn’t really give cs2 any advantage - fsr is already in the game. if you’re trying to do stretched 4:3 maybe use your screen’s upscaler?
          • for me there was something similar on nvidia, had to toggle vsync and/or msaa on/off, not sure which combination did it. on amd it’s fine. maybe one of those things where you either wait for nvidia to not prioritize big ai, or you give the new NVK driver a try.

            2. it was working fine for me too, until an update to CS2 broke audio for me and I needed a patch
            3. screens upscaler? Like change the monitor resolution? That’s the only option with how broken no. 1 is
            4. ProtonDB shows that the FPS drops also occur with AMD

            I own a 4k monitor, but my GPU can’t really handle it, FSR doesn’t really help because for some reason it also doesn’t reduce Vram usage so the lag continues, I am forced to either play windowed or reduce my monitor resolution to either 2k or 1080p for better FPS, and occasionally CS2 assigns some vital graphics shit to ram when Vram is full and it STAYS in ram, making my FPS hard stuck on 40-50 FPS.

            This game was made to be run on even 2gb cards, how does it struggle on Linux like so?

            I play on the LOWEST settings, I got 100 FPS on Cyberpunk 2077 high settings w/o rt 2k Res, how does CS2 make me suffer the most out of every other game in my library?

            I agree. I was just defending that other person. Still think it’s ass the the steam client is a second class citizen on Linux. It’s still filled with so many bugs you don’t see on windows

              I wouldn’t know since I’ve never used it on Windows, I created my Steam account when they started supporting Linux.

              I guess I’m just grateful a major company is making desktop apps and compatibility layers for Linux, so I’m willing to look past a few issues.

                  Opinions are always subjective… not sure what you’re getting at.

                  Here’s my perspective. I’ve been a Linux user longer than I’ve been a Steam user, in fact I only made a Steam account when they came to Linux. In the 12-ish years since they launched on Linux, they have only made my experience playing games on Linux better.

                  What other company is comparable here? The closest is maybe GOG, but they don’t even support Linux with their client, much less actually invest in the platform. They do make a few older games work on Linux, but that’s about it. Their first party titles don’t even support Linux.

                  So yeah, I’m willing to overlook a few things. That doesn’t make me a Steam fanboy, and I’d happily move my spending elsewhere if another company stepped up and provided decent Linux support. But the closest we have is GOG basically treating Heroic purchases like affiliate links (not sure what the share is), and that doesn’t instill a ton of confidence, though it does encourage me to occasionally buy from them.

            There’s still no light theme, you can’t upload videos, screenshots on your feed take like 20% of the screen with no proper full-screen view (it opens another window after two clicks that you have to close later), likes and comments don’t sync well between the friends feed and the game feed, and this list goes on and on. Steam client is far from fantastic. It’s a half-baked product with inconsistent user experience.

              Hmm, I guess none of that bothers me:

              • I prefer dark theme
              • I don’t care about videos/screenshots/social stuff aside from “wanna join my game?” - I use a separate chat for that
              • feed?

              But I can see how it can be frustrating if you use those features.

      Checked and no they haven’t lol.

      I don’t think this used to be an issue because I used to use desktop icon launchers in the past, which makes it weird that it somehow changed. I think maybe after the big new UI update?
