I was literally thinking of Pearl Harbor this week.
I’m sure many might argue that it changed nothing, that the U.S. would enter the war anyway.
But damn did it piss off a hornets nest. It has to be one of the greatest tactical blunders in human history.
Would we have entered the war in the pacific though?
That’s where the bulk of the US war effort was during WW2.
Japan might have been able to keep going and possibly turn it all around and actually meet their aims in China without having to face the US.
I suppose if we’d joined the war in Europe we’d back our Pacific allies same as we did the other way around, but I wonder if we’d have had the same “now you fucked up” ethos to it.
You say “the war,” but it’s really two different wars that we’re talking about here that just shared some belligerents. The US would’ve had less reason to fight Japan without Pearl Harbor.
What a way to go.
